Narrative control: The colonizer’s voice, fragmentation, and naming in Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargaso Sea(2025-06-19) Gonzàlez Vidal, Mar; Grau Perejoan, Maria[eng] This paper explores Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea as a postcolonial response to Jane Eyre. It focuses on how Rhys uses narrative voice, naming, and fragmentation to underscore her criticism of colonial discourses. Through theorists such as Said, Spivak, and Bhabha, I use postcolonial theory to explore how Antoinette’s identity might be shaped and controlled. Overall, this paper argues that the novel's language and structure play a crucial role in exposing the process of dispossession and control that Antoinette suffers, as well as in challenging traditional narration and asking the reader for active interpretation.Treball de fi de grau
The Picture in Motion Picture: A Comparative Analysis of Aesthetics, Social Status and Fame in Two Adaptations of The Picture of Dorian Gray: Oliver Parker's Dorian Gray (2009) and Coralie Fargeat's The Substance (2024)(2025-06-19) Amghar Amghar, Lamya; Haiduc, Sonia AmaliaAquest treball de fi de grau té com a objectiu comparar i contrastar dues adaptacions cinematogràfiques de El retrat de Dorian Gray d’Oscar Wilde: Dorian Gray (2009), d’Oliver Parker, i La substància (2024), de Coralie Fargeat, ambdues estrenades al segle XXI.
Tut, Pooh, and Hum: A Corpus-Driven Pragmatic Analysis of Onomatopoeic Interjections in Sherlock Holmes and Contemporary Fiction(2025-06-19) Zhang, Liuyue; Laso Martín, Natàlia JudithWhile reading Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes series, I noticed the frequent use of the interjection tut in character dialogues, but its meaning was not immediately clear to me. Most online dictionaries define tut as an exclamation expressing disapproval or annoyance. However, these definitions were insufficient for me, a non-native English speaker, to fully grasp the precise emotions or communicative functions conveyed by such interjections, especially when they appeared in narrative contexts. This observation led me to question whether other interjections in the Sherlock Holmes series might also pose challenges for readers due to the lack of phonetic, prosodic cues in the reading of written text.Treball de fi de grau
Jeanette’s journey to happiness in Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?(2023-06-20) Ocharan Centeno, Helena; Alsina, CristinaThis project aims to determine the implications of Jeanette’s “happiness” in the fictional memoir Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? by Jeanette Winterson. The research has focused not only on the dichotomy implicit in the title’s question, but also on the ramifications that the choice of “being happy” has throughout the entire narrative. The theoretical framework for this paper has been based mainly on Sara Ahmed’s critical analysis of the concept of happiness in The Promise of Happiness and the queer perspectives and alternatives that she suggests, and ultimately on the need of redefining an inclusive happinessTreball de fi de grau
Uncovering the Void: Sapphism, Hysteria and the Phallic Myth in Le Fanu’s Carmilla (1872)(2024-06-18) Salgado López, Thalia; López, Gemma (López Sánchez)This paper analyses the ways in which Le Fanu’s Carmilla exposes and subverts patriarchal heteronormative discourse and its domination of the female body. Through the study of the protagonists’ relationship, this work argues that the novella reveals the fictionality of various patriarchal discourses as well as presents the alternatives of female (homo)sexuality, autonomy, and knowledge. To prove this, the topics of sapphism, hysteria and male authority are explored. The paper concludes that the relationship between Laura and Carmilla disrupts the gender-sex binary and the heteronormativity that uphold the patriarchal system, therefore uncovering its fictionality and its demonization of female desire and agency.

Mind the Social Gap: Women's Status and Narrative Strategies Against Patriarchal Violence in Tamil Nadu(2023-09-05) Garcia Coll, Roger; Alonso Breto, Isabel[eng] This paper examines patriarchal violence against women in Tamil Nadu, South India, by comparing the cases of two women of substantially different social and educational backgrounds: one is the urbanite protagonist of Meena Kandasamy's novel «When I Hit You» (2017); the second, a woman from a small village in a rural area near Chennai. Critical discussions, relevant findings and my own experience as an observer are combined in order to establish if social status plays a role in determining the chances of overcoming abuse. To discuss this idea, the research contextualises the abuse within the frame of subalternity, patriarchy and caste. Then it analyses the forms and actors of violence, outlines the resources available for the victims and proposes one technique of expressive writing as a healing tool. Results suggest that higher status does not necessarily provide protection from being abused but certainly contributes to overcoming the abuse and possessing more solid tools for healing.
The Wilderness as a Queer Refuge: A Multimedia Exploration from the 19th Century to Present Day(2023-06-06) Learner Fortea, Nadia; Andrés González, Rodrigo[eng] This text explores the affinity lesbians, and queer people in general, have towards the wilderness and undeveloped spaces through a variety of media including literature, visual art, and audiovisuals. The objective of this paper is to better understand the reasons for this interest and how homosexuality and the wilderness have become part of our contemporary zeitgeist in fiction. Using mostly North American examples from primarily the 19th to the 21st century, I approach the ways capitalism has harmed and helped this trend and to what extent its fictitious representation reflects reality. This research project serves more as an anthropological study than a criticism or analysis through which a certain theoretical framework is employed. The methodological focus is on making connections through the patterns found both in the past and present relating to LGBT living environments and the housing desires of lesbians with a sociological perspective. The emphasis is, therefore, on the political and social context of the time during which these trends were popular.Treball de fi de grau
A whole other story: the influence of task modality on the patterns of interaction of young EFL learners(2023-06-19) Vila Moreno, Gadriel; Tragant Mestres, Elsa[eng] Research on Second Language Acquisition regarding task-based language learning and computer-mediated communication has been mainly conducted from a cognitive-interactionist perspective. Furthermore, there is a lack of studies that focus on the patterns of interaction young English language learners develop during pair work. This paper, which is part of a larger study on task-based interaction and production, assesses the influence of task modality on dyadic interaction through the lens of Vygotsky's (1978) sociocultural perspective and an adaptation of Storch's (2002) model of dyadic interaction. The results show slight differences in the enactment of the tasks depending on the modality, but no change in the pattern of interaction itself.Treball de fi de grau
The translation of English collocations into Spanish(2023-06-20) Jáñez Ocaña, Paula; Rion, Rosanna[eng] Collocations are known to be arbitrary word combinations that occur in all languages. When it comes to the translation of English collocations into Spanish, there is not always a specific collocation in the linguistic repertoire of the target language. As a result, translators employ other mechanisms that will stay faithful to the idea, more than the actual words that are used in the source text. This research paper analyses the strategies the translator María José Díez uses in the translation of How to stop time by Matt Haig. From some minor changes in the lexical choice of verb + noun collocations to more complex alternatives in participial adjectives + noun collocations, this study offers a deep dive into how collocations are translated.Treball de fi de grau
Examining the Effectiveness of Captions in EFL Slang Terms and Idioms(2023-06-16) Port Puig, Maria; Celaya Villanueva, Ma. Luz (María Luz), 1962-; College students[eng] The use of audiovisual materials as a language acquisition resource has greatly increased over the last years as they are an engaging, multimodal form of input. As an effective tool for L2 learning, the use of on-screen text further encourages the acquisition of language, especially vocabulary. The present study, therefore, aims to examine the effectiveness of captions for the acquisition of British vocabulary, more specifically, slang terms and idioms. Two groups (n=6) of proficient-level students of English were exposed to a 5-minute video with captions and without captions, respectively, and were asked to take a test immediately before and after the viewing. Findings show that both groups improved their performance after watching the excerpt, regardless of the condition, although the captioned group scored a higher percentage of answers in the post-test. Thus, results demonstrate that captions foster the acquisition of English vocabulary, as suggested by previous studies.Treball de fi de grau
An Overview of Forensic Linguistics and its Application in Real-Life Cases(2023-06-16) Gallego Balcells, Claudia; Gavaldà Ferré, Núria[eng] Forensic linguistics is an emerging multidisciplinary field within applied linguistics that focuses on the various intersections between language and law. To ensure a fair and effective legal process, it is crucial to have an understanding of linguistic principles in order to avoid misinterpretations or misunderstandings. This study provides a general overview of the expansive field of forensic linguistics and highlights its diverse contributions to the criminal justice system. It provides a summary of prominent legal cases and analyses the intersection between forensic linguistics and applied linguistics. Therefore, this end-of-degree paper aims to demonstrate how this field of linguistics can play a key role when it comes to solving legal cases. To develop such analysis, this investigation will be making reference to multiple distinguished forensic linguists and their involvement in solving legal and criminal cases.Treball de fi de grau
'Peter and Wendy' (1911): Modernism and the Reinvention of Tradition(2023-06-20) Merenciano González, Andreu; López, Gemma (López Sánchez)[eng] In this End of Degree Paper, I have analysed 'Peter and Wendy' by J. M. Barrie (1911) as a Modernist text in terms of style and narratology: the innovation and complexity of the narrative voice together with the satirised use of traditional fairytale iconography and Victorian characteristics demonstrate stylistic characteristics of the British early 20th-century literary movement. In fact, the contrast between traditional traits and Modernist narratology clearly defines the socio-historical context of the novel: the Edwardian period, defined as a hinge between the most traditional and Victorian heritage and the sudden changes of modernity, which implied not only social consequences but also a new redefinition of literature. Moreover, I have detached from this project any possible Author-based readings (which have stained the novel with studies of perversion and paedophilia) in order to defend that active readership encourages critical thinking through a Post-structuralist application of text analyses.Treball de fi de grau
Why can't I be like you? Politics of (white) representation and its damaging effects for the black community in Toni Morrison's 'The Bluest Eye'(2023-06-19) Ramírez Galán, Esther; Andrés González, Rodrigo[eng] Toni Morrison’s first novel, 'The Bluest Eye' (1970), tells the story of Pecola, an Afro-American little girl, in the United States of the 1940s. She and her family are in a vulnerable situation due to the way in which the concept of Americanness has been culturally constructed around discourses which are spread by institutions such schools or by mass media, like cinema. This rhetoric, based on the superiority of the white “race”, was devised to exclude the black community who, lacking representation, eventually internalize and validate their own inferiority. This end-of-degree paper aims to analyze the way in which such imposed exclusion affects some of the characters in two specific areas: on the one hand, how the concept of “home” becomes a space of violent cohabitation; on the other hand, the construction of self- identity when it is based on an alien cultural model.
