[cat] Aquesta tesis se centra en l'anàlisi etnogràfic de la pràctica social de l'escriptura katakana. El katakana és una escriptura sil·làbica emprada principalment en la transcripció dels estrangerismes en japonès. Escriure un estrangerisme en katakana implica un procés dual que a l'hora que adapta una veu estrangera a la fonètica i la grafia japoneses, la singularitza en la seva escriptura. El katakana s'empra també en l'escriptura de mots japonesos i sino-japonesos però sols en usos particulars tals com emfasitzar, expressar emocions, transcriure sons, onomatopeies i pronunciacions, així com en la descodificació de llenguatges tècnics. Tots aquests casos tenen en comú la representació gràfica d'una diferència. La tesis també argumenta que aquesta característica fa jugar al katakana un paper complex i polièdric en la comunicació escrita japonesa. En aquest sentit, la recerca explora l'evolució històrica del katakana, establint una tipologia de la seva pràctica d'escriptura contemporània. Des d'aquesta base, l'escriptura katakana és entesa com una representació cultural aplicada a l'expressió ambivalent de la diferència en l'experiència social, que resulta significativa en la conformació de la identitat japonesa. En darrer terme, la proposta de la tesis és repensar les dinàmiques culturals implicades en la producció identitària.
[eng] This dissertation focuses on the ethnographic analysis of the social practice of the "katakana" script. "katakana" is a syllabic script used mainly to transcribe loanwords into Japanese. Writing a loanword in "katakana" conforms the 'borrowed' term into the Japanese phonological system at the same time that this term is marked in a different script. "katakana" is also applied to Japanese and Sino-Japanese words, but only in special conditions such as those that denote emphasis, express emotions, transcribe sounds and onomatopoeia, render a pronunciation or decode technical languages. All these cases have in common the graphic representation of a difference. The dissertation also argues that this feature makes the "katakana" play a complex and multifaceted role in Japanese written communication. Hence, the research explores the historical evolution of the "katakana" script and sets up a typology of its contemporary writing practice. From this background, the "katakana" script is understood as a cultural representation applied to the ambivalent expression of difference in social experience, which plays a significant role in the construction of Japanese identity. Ultimately, the purpose of the dissertation is to rethink critically the cultural dynamics involved in the identity production.
