Abstract

[eng] This paper intends to read Jacqueline Harpman's novel 'I Who Have Never Known Men' (1995) in the light of gender and sexuality studies. The hypothesis sets out that the protagonist's social exclusion and sadness are due to the women's perseverance to keep acting according to the heteropatriarchy's logics, even though they no longer live in a place where these make sense. In order to analyse this, the paper divides in two main points. On the one hand, the naturalization of sexual difference and heterosexual union is being compared to the theory of Monique Wittig in 'The Straight Mind and Other Essays' (1992), as well as the viability of her preposition, the lesbian subject. On the other hand, the paper dialogues with Sarah Ahmed's chapter «Unhappy queers» ('The Promise of Happiness') (2010) to analyse how the sadness of the main protagonist is a projection from the women.
