Resum

[en] The term Europa occurs three times in Vergil, all three in the Aeneid and always with an exact geographical sense as a part of the world. Two times occurs in opposition of Asia, which means the antagonism between West/East, understanding the first place as civilized and the second as barbarian. The Aeneid raises the question about 'Asian' people as Troians, that is, the Roman ancestors, and 'European' as Latin people. We will examine the ways in which Vergil solves this paradox by unifying the two enemy peoples and also by other subtle means. For instance, there is a transformation of the image of goddess Cybele who appears without her orgiastic ('Asiatic') attributes but under a facies of Great Mother, in all her solemnity and as a protector of Aeneas offspring and people.
