El Manuale di linguistica friulana s'enceta amb un pròleg (p. V-VI), no al volum, sinó comú a tota la col·lecció Manuals of Romance Linguistics (MRL) de l'editorial De Gruyter, en què els coordinadors del projecte, Günter Holtus i Fernando Sánchez Miret, apunten la ferma voluntat que l'esmentada col-lecció actualitzi i aprofundeixi els aspectes tractats en dues obres precedents de referència en l'àmbit de la romanística: el Lexikon der Romanistischen Linguistik LRL)(1988-2005) i la Romanische Sprachgeschichte (RSG)(2003-2008).
