Abstract

[en] In the late sixth century, Italy lived a tumultuous period with tragic consequences: after the stability represented by the administration of Theodoric the Amal, the long bloody Gothic War (535‐554) and the Lombard invasion (568) implied the definitive breakdown of the Italian social and economic fabric. However, still there were some focuses of classical culture among the aristocratic élites which resisted disappearing despite Christian overwhelming influence, and they left few but precious testimonies of the crepuscular wisdom of Antiquity. An example of the survival of this ancient knowledge in the very first years of Byzantine Rome is the carmen that notary Eugenius devoted to his son Boethius and his wife Argentea, both dead in 577. The aim of this paper is double: on the one hand, to carry out a linguistic, literary, and epigraphic analysis of the texts which define this document; on the other, to contextualize and interpret the historical data that we may deduce from the inscription about the condition of the senatorial class in Byzantine period and certain testamentary wills of patrimonial nature.
