Abstract
[ang] Gastrointestinal Disorders show a high prevalence of Vitamin D (VD) deficiency. VD is a nutrient with a potential role in improving intestinal health. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder that affects patients’ quality of life, causing pain, abdominal bloating, irregular bowel habits, and anxious-depressive symptoms. This article aims to describe the physiological mechanism of VD in IBS and to evaluate the potential effectiveness of its supplementation. Searches have been conducted in databases such as Pubmed (Medline), Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar, including in vitro, animal, and human trials for the mechanism of action, and Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses for the evidence about supplementation. Vitamin D could improve patients' quality of life by maintaining the intestinal epithelium's integrity, exerting an anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effect, promoting microbiota balance, and ensuring a beneficial neuropsychiatric state. Most IBS patients exhibit VD deficiency, although studies are lacking to establish the cause-effect relationship between VD and IBS. Nowadays, there are non-significative effects of the use of supplementation for improving symptoms and the quality of life in patients with IBS. It is still unclear whether VD deficiency is the cause of IBS or rather IBS causes VD deficiency.
