Freedom is a State of Body: Rewriting the Body in Caribbean Female Poetry

Abstract

[eng] This project presents an analysis of Caribbean female collections of poetry such as Wife by Tiphanie Yanique, She Who Sleeps With Bones and The Merchant of Feathers, both collections by Tanya Shirley, and Pepper Seed by Malika Booker. The aim of the project is to demonstrate how the female body constitutes the means to freedom by detaching it from the oppressive discourses that label the body of the Black woman on the Caribbean. Before the analyses, I will discuss the universal notion of freedom, feminist theories of the female body and of the Black female body. Moreover, I will analyse the dichotomization of the mind and the body, in which the mind is always more privileged, and I will unfold the historical moments that shaped the identity of the Black Caribbean women, and more importantly, how these women changed the meaning of freedom through every-day bodily practices.

[spa] Este proyecto presenta un análisis de colecciones de poesía caribeña femenina tales como Wife de Tiphanie Yanique, She Who Sleeps With Bones y The Merchant of Feathers, las dos colecciones de Tanya Shirley, y Pepper Seed de Malika Booker. El objetivo de este proyecto es demonstrar como el cuerpo de la mujer constituye el medio para obtener la libertad desligándolo de los discursos opresivos que etiquetan el cuerpo de la mujer negra en el Caribe. Antes del análisis, hablaré sobre el significado universal de la libertad, seguido de teorías feministas sobre el cuerpo de la mujer y el cuerpo de la mujer negra. Además, exploraré la dicotomía entre la mente y el cuerpo, en la que la mente siempre se privilegia más, y expondré momentos históricos que constituyeron la identidad de las mujeres negras en el Caribe, pero lo que es más importante, cómo estas mujeres cambiaron el significado de la libertad a través de las prácticas corporales cotidianas.
