[eng] This dissertation examines the possible activation of empathy in action practices and participatory experiences within contemporary art. It begins with a theoretical framework that traces the evolution of the concept, from Einfühlung to psychology, phenomenology, humanistic psychotherapy, social neuroscience and the affective turn, while also distinguishing it from related notions such as sympathy, compassion, pity, mercy and hospitality. Drawing on relational aesthetics and the social turn in art, the study analyses works by Joseph Beuys, Tania Bruguera, Ana Mendieta, Núria Güell, Lygia Clark and the Empathy Museum, initiated by Roman Krznaric and Clare Patey. The dissertation concludes that art doesn’t produce empathy automatically, but that it can generate situations of encounter, participation or confrontation that allow us to approach the experience of others.
