Sant Esteve als retaules gòtics de Catalunya. Aspectes llegendaris i populars

Abstract

[cat] Aquest treball de final de grau aborda la llegenda de sant Esteve, incloses les seves particularitats en el context medieval de Catalunya, i com aquesta és plasmada en els retaules gòtics catalans, especialment en tres retaules del darrer període gòtic que presenten estretes relacions estilístiques i iconogràfiques entre ells: el retaule de Sant Esteve dels freners, el de Sant Esteve de Granollers i el de Sant Esteve de la Doma. Al llarg del treball s’han revisat tant les fonts textuals que narren la vida de sant Esteve com les aportacions bibliogràfiques al coneixement d’aquests tres conjunts. A través de l’estudi de les tres obres, s’exploren les especificitats de la llegenda, fent èmfasi en la seva vessant més fantasiosa i popular, interrelacionada amb la religiositat i la devoció de la societat catalana de l’època.

[eng]This Final Degree Project examines the legend of Saint Stephen including its particularities within the medieval Catalan context, as well as how it is represented in Catalan Gothic altarpieces, with particular emphasis on three altarpieces from the late Gothic period that display close stylistic and iconographic relationships: the altarpiece of Saint Stephen of the Guild of Bridle-Makers, the altarpiece Saint Stephen of Granollers, and the altarpiece of Saint Stephen of La Doma. Throughout this study, both the textual sources recounting the life of Saint Stephen and the existing scholarly literature on these three works have been reviewed. By analysing these three works, the thesis explores the distinctive aspects of the legend, placing particular emphasis on its more imaginative and popular dimension, closely intertwined with the religiosity and devotional practices of Catalan society during the period.
