La idealització d'orient a la Baixa Edat Mitjana: el Preste Joan i altres mons desconeguts

Abstract

El treball que em disposaré a realitzar tractarà com a temàtica central la idealització que es tenia d’Orient des de l’Occident europeu durant la Baixa Edat Mitjana (segles XIII-XV). Per això, caldrà respondre a la pregunta sobre què és Occident i què és Orient en aquest període històric des de la cosmovisió europea del món. Principalment, veurem les imatges idealitzades que es formularen en l’imaginari europeu respecte a Orient en els manuscrits baixmedievals que conformen el gènere de la literatura de viatges. També serà necessari analitzar la noció medieval de mirabilia, preguntant-nos què és el meravellós en la mentalitat occidental. Analitzarem també els espais imaginaris i desconeguts que se situaven a Orient, considerant el regne del Preste Joan com el màxim exponent de la formulació mental de les imatges idealitzades a Occident respecte al món exòtic i meravellós que era Orient.

The work that I am going to undertake will deal with the central theme of idealization of the East from the European West during the Low Middle Ages (XIII-XV centuries). That is why, we must answer the question of what the West is and what the East is in this historical period from the European western world perspective. Mainly, we will see the idealized images that were formulated in the European imagination with respect to the East in the low-medieval manuscripts that created the genre of travel literature. It will also be necessary to analyze the medieval notion of mirabilia, asking ourselves what is wonderful in the Western mentality. We will also analyze the imaginary and the unknown spaces that were located in the East, considering the realm of Prester John as the greatest exponent of the mental formulation of idealized images in the West with respect to the exotic and wonderful world that the East was.
