Abstract
The main goal of this work is to understand discrete-time Markov chains and how these can be useful to solve real-life problems. This is done in two parts: in the first one, we develop the theoretical tools that we need to work with this type of stochastic processes. Theorems and propositions appear together with examples for a better understanding of the issue. In the second part, we center our attention in a specific problem, epidemics. We explain a SIR model used to describe the evolution of an infectious disease. Finally, we show several simulations for this model and analyze them.
