[spa] Aquest treball de final de grau es centra en l’estudi comparatiu entre dos artistes nord-americans del segle XIX, com van ser James McNeill Whistler i John Singer Sargent. La recerca posa el focus en com utilitzen la moda en els seus retrats femenins, analitzant la funció que té la indumentària dins de la composició. De fet, s’aprofundeix en un aspecte poc tractat de l’obra de Whistler, com va ser el seu interès per la moda i el vestuari com una part del llenguatge pictòric. Així com, Sargent, considerat el retratista més influent de la seva generació, va recórrer a la moda per dotar les seves figures de presència i elegància. La comparació entre ambdós artistes permet aprofundir en com el vestuari en els retrats femenins esdevé un element clau per entendre la representació de la dona, les convencions socials i la manera com l’art i la moda estan vinculades.
[eng] This final degree project focuses on the comparative study between two 19th-century American artists, James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent. The research focuses on how they use fashion in their female portraits, analyzing the function of clothing within the composition. In fact, it delves into a little-discussed aspect of Whistler's work, such as his interest in fashion and costume as part of the pictorial language. Similarly, Sargent, considered the most influential portraitist of his generation, used fashion to give his figures presence and elegance. The comparison between both artists allows us to delve deeper into how costume in female portraits becomes a key element in understanding the representation of women, social conventions and the way in which art and fashion are linked.
