Trauma and abuse; the risk factors and effects on the Longitudinal course and Outcomes of Youth with Bipolar Disorder

Abstract

[eng] This doctoral thesis arises from the interest in investigating the role of traumatic events (i.e. physical and/or sexual abuse) in the course of bipolar disorder among youth, and to further elucidate what are the risk factors that pose this youth in a vulnerable position to experience their first lifetime physical and/or sexual abuse.

[spa] La presente tesis se presenta en formato clásico con dos artículos publicados en revista Q1 (Journal of affective Disorders). La tesis está realizada sobre la mayor muestra seguida durante más tiempo de jóvenes con trastorno bipolar de inicio en edad pediátrica, y está basada en dos estudios. El primero evalúa los efectos del trauma, específicamente el abuso sexual y/o físico, sobre el curso de la enfermedad bipolar en la infancia y adolescencia. El segundo estudio, evalúa cuáles son los factores de riesgo que existen para experimentar abuso físico y/o sexual, de nueva aparición, evaluando variables clínicas, sociales y demográficas en una muestra seguida durante una media de 12 años.
