Si existe una contraposición entre naturaleza y cultura, pero las relaciones entre ambas concepciones no resultan ni unívocas ni fáciles de demarcar, algo parecido sucede cuando el punto de mira es el derecho y sus relaciones con 'la vida'. El derecho y la ciencia entran en clara relación en el momento en que la actividad científica repercute en los bienes y las personas, como es el caso de las biotecnologías. Puede decirse que el derecho constituye un marco común de acuerdo regulador de la actividad científica. Que ese marco no se convierta en un corsé depende de nuestra capacidad de evolución y de hacer funcionar de forma transparente los mecanismos de información y control mediante entramados normativos que constituyen el aporte de medidas éticas, sociales y jurídicas que hacen que una sociedad sea verdaderamente democrática a la hora de decidir las políticas públicas.
If there is a contrast between nature and culture, but relations between the two concepts are neither univocal nor easy to define, something similar happens when the focus is the law and its relationship to “life”. Law and science come into clear relation-ship at the moment when scientific activity has implications for property and persons, as in the case of biotechnologies. Arguably, the law is a framework of common agree-ment regulating scientific activity. That this framework does not become a straitjacket depends on our openness to change and our ability to operate reporting and control mechanisms transparently by means of regulatory systems: the ethical, social and legal measures that make public policy decisions the product of a truly democratic society
