Resum

[eng] This thesis studies the applications of the Riemann-Roch Theorem to hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces. The main objective is to establish, based on the classical characterization and the central tools introduced, a new characterization of these surfaces in terms of plane algebraic curves. The thesis is structured in three parts. First, the relationship between algebraic curves and Riemann surfaces is established through normalization, a construction that assigns to each irreducible plane curve a compact non-singular Riemann surface. Second, the Riemann-Roch Theorem is proved by following the Brill-Noether strategy, thereby establishing a correspondence between the topology of the surface and the algebraic structure of its divisors. Finally, these results are applied to hyperelliptic surfaces. The classical characterization is analyzed, which describes them as Riemann surfaces of genus $g \geq 2$ admitting a degree $2$ morphism to $\mathbb{C}\infty$ and for which an explicit description of the canonical morphism is obtained as $\phi_K = v{g-1} \circ \pi$. However, the curve associated to this characterization, $y^2 = h(x)$ with $h$ a polynomial with simple roots and odd degree, has a non-ordinary singularity at infinity. This obstacle motivates the new characterization, which establishes that every hyperelliptic surface of genus $g$ is the normalization of a plane curve of degree $g+2$ with a unique ordinary singularity of multiplicity $g$.
