Abstract
[eng] The representation of women has been subjected to the patters of a voyeuristic male gaze that projects desires into their bodies and identities, perpetuating the objectification and the domination over the female body. In Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), Céline Sciamma incorporates the feminist theories about the representation of women in the cinematographic field, which were originated during the second wave of feminism. In this film, Sciamma proposes a new perspective on the representation of women’s bodies and lesbian desire. In order to analyse the resources that the filmmaker uses in this film, I have done research into John Berger, Teresa De Lauretis and Laura Mulvey’s outlooks regarding the ways of seeing and representing women. Moreover, to analyse the presence of lesbian identity and its manifestation in the gaze of the film, I have mainly resorted to Monique Wittig and Karen Hollinger.
