Herencia y etnicidad entre los garífuna de Belice

Abstract

[spa]En este artículo se examinan las construcciones de la identidad en el proceso de movilización del National Garifuna Council y de la World Garifuna Organization, y en los posicionamientos de los garífuna beliceños por lo que respecta a la adscripción étnica. Esta adscripción oscila entre el énfasis en el mestizaje afroamerindio y la insistencia en el carácter negro o africano de su cultura. El análisis de las distintas construcciones de la identidad garífuna en Belice, contribuye a la ampliación del conocimiento de la etnicidad y de las cuestiones interrelacionadas que entran en juego en ese proceso como la herencia o el legado común asumido por una comunidad, y el territorio, entendido como el espacio apropiado socioculturalmente por esa comunidad. [eng]This article analyses the construction of identity in the mobilization processes carried out by social organizations (the National Garifuna Council and the World Garifuna Organization) and in the different stances taken by the Belizean Garifuna on their ethnic adscription, which on the one hand emphasizes Amerindian mestizaje and on the other, the black or afro component of their culture. This study of the different identity constructions amongst the Belizean Garifuna contributes to a deepening of our knowledge of ethnicity and the interrelated issues that come into play in the process, such as, inheritance the common legacy taken on by the community; and territory, understood as the socio-cultural space of the community
