The researcher as a curator in the AI era

Abstract

This presentation introduces a proposed application of content curation methodology to scientific publishing within the current context of artificial intelligence disruption. The 4S’s method of content curation (Search, Select, Sense-making, Share) developed by Guallar and Leiva-Aguilera (2013) is adapted from professional to scientific content. It argues for the utility of the conceptual and practical framework of content curation to address the risks researchers face regarding AI, such as epistemic laziness and the loss of intellectual autonomy. Finally, practical proposals for scientific curation are presented, including the critical filtering funnel and academic sense-making techniques, while consistently emphasizing the central and directing role of the researcher-curator
