Introduction: New Perspectives for the Sociology of the Arts
(Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) Rodríguez Morató, Arturo
Rodríguez Morató offers a complete overview of the sociology of the arts in its present state, focused on its most innovative developments. This presentation shows how the field of the sociology of the arts has been shaped in recent decades—through successive renovations, to reaching full maturity. It also clarifies the nature of the new stage in which the discipline currently finds itself, characterised by its effervescent theoretical creativity and empirical expansion. The discussion on the current state of the field is complemented with a presentation of new areas and focus of interest (globalisation, materiality, evaluation or creativity, among others), which provides a broad vision of the potential of this specialism. Finally, Rodríguez Morató reflects on the desirable horizon of future development for this discipline.

The challenges of recalibrating the values of culture in the cultural field : Key recommendations
(Routledge, 2025) Audemard, Julien; Dupin-Meynard, Félix; Négrier, Emmanuel; Rodríguez Morató, Arturo; Zarlenga, Matías I
This chapter presents key recommendations for recalibrating cultural policies in Europe. It identifies five significant challenges: acknowledging the plurality of cultural values, fostering democratic governance, enhancing policy coherence, improving evaluation practices, and developing relevant cultural information systems. We argue that public policies often fail to reflect the values citizens associate with culture, such as well-being or community engagement. Recommendations include fostering transparent debates on cultural values, promoting inclusive and context-sensitive governance, aligning policy instruments with stated values, and adopting flexible, co-created evaluation methods. The chapter also emphasizes the importance of data systems that take into account diverse cultural expressions and evolving social dynamics. Ultimately, we advocate for a multi-level participatory approach that connects institutions, professionals, and communities, making cultural value a foundation for democratic and inclusive policymaking across Europe.

    Introduction
    (Routledge, 2025) Rodríguez Morató, Arturo
This chapter presents the problem of valuing culture as a major social challenge for today’s European societies, which the UNCHARTED project sought to address in depth. This book summarizes the results of this project. To begin, the project is contextualized in relation to three classic views on this issue: those of David Throsby, Pierre Bourdieu, and John Holden. In contrast to these, the project then defines its own approach, which is pragmatic, based on a pluralistic view of value and a complex view of the dynamics of valuation, as well as being purely empirical and aimed at producing useful results for improving cultural management and policy. The logic of the project and its development are then explained. Finally, the organization of the book is described, the contents of the various chapters are outlined, and future challenges for continuing work in this area are identified.

Critical factors in shaping the parameters of cultural valuation in Europe
(Routledge, 2025) Rodríguez Morató, Arturo; Zarlenga, Matías I; Alexander, Victoria D.; Peterson Gilbert, Oliver
This chapter explores different factors that have influenced the shaping of cultural values in Europe. It addresses and explores five critical factors identified in the project considered relevant to this constitution, namely rising diversity, globalization and digitization, urban transformations, the development of cultural policy, and neoliberalism. Through this explorative exercise, the chapter provides a baseline reference for the whole UNCHARTED project and shows how the parameters of cultural valuation are constructed in European societies today according to existing knowledge and information. At the end of the chapter, a series of coordinates for the valuation of culture are identified, which operate as a general context for the situated valuation of actors within the cultural sphere and in its various functional areas (cultural participation, cultural production and heritage management, and cultural administration).

New value perspectives in culture-led urban regeneration
(Routledge, 2025) Rodríguez Morató, Arturo; Sánchez Belando, Victoria; Zamorano, Mariano; Zarlenga, Matías I.
Until now, culture-led urban regeneration initiatives have been conceived and evaluated mainly according to neoliberal parameters linked to economic value. We wanted to show the importance of approaching this issue from a different angle, that offered by the UNCHARTED framework and its pluralistic view of cultural values, outlining an alternative meaning of culture-led organic regeneration. To this end, we examined the case of the Fàbriques de Creació (Creation Factories) programme in Barcelona, which we analysed in the context of the long history of culture-led urban regeneration in Barcelona and in contrast to two other control cases, one in Budapest and the other in Porto. This chapter reports on this work and the methodological reflections that followed. It then presents a series of recommendations for improving the evaluation of urban cultural regeneration initiatives. Finally, it concludes with the assessments of some leading experts in the field on the new perspective generated.

Digital cultural policy in Spain: the game of emulation
(Routledge, 2023) Rodríguez Morató, Arturo; Guirao Soro, Glòria
The development of digital cultural policy in Spain started relatively late but has accelerated in recent years. This chapter presents an analysis of the different phases of the Spanish development of digital cultural policy based on varied sources, including legal and policy documents, research literature, expert reports and interviews with relevant stakeholders. It shows how, in Spain, general digital policies precede digital policies specific for culture, are imposed on them and greatly determine them. This is the result of the important influence of EU policies nationally and of the dynamics of interaction between policy initiatives at various territorial levels within the country. The video games sector is presented as an example of the interplay of policies focusing on digital culture at different administration levels in Spain (regional, national) and beyond (European).

    Fer familia sense parella
(Copalqui Editorial, 2008) Almeda, Elisabet; Di Nella, Dino; Camps Calvet, Clara
Fire, drums and the making of place during a correfoc
    (Routledge, 2022) Berrens, Karla
This chapter addresses the sensorial influence on the making of place during Correfocs (fire events in Catalan Popular culture). It explores the multisensory relationships that articulate during Correfocs, attending to the sensuous dance produced by fire and drums in the urban space. The chapter explores the interaction this temporary sensory intensity has on the making of place for the devils (burners) and tabalers (drummers). It focuses on the place’s ephemeral dimensions arising during Correfocs. It examines the impact those may have in the portrayal of a space in the participants’ imaginary and their temporality. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic this chapter presents data and its analysis to date: the research is ongoing.

(Bellaterra, 2012) Camps Calvet, Clara; Almeda, Elisabet; Di Nella, Dino
Las familias monoparentales van adquiriendo, poco a poco, un protagonismo mayor en los países occidentales (incluido el Estado Español). Fiestas, public space, and rape culture. A study of the Wolf Pack case
(Routledge, 2020) Morero Beltrán, Anna; Camps Calvet, Clara
This chapter will focus on understanding which elements related to the festive context in the public space are used to explain that sexual violence against women can be understood as a part of the festivity itself. To do so, we will analyse the case of ‘La Manada’, a gang rape case that happened in July of 2016 during the San Fermín, a traditional and centenary festivity held in Pamplona (Spain). The verdict dictated by the judges caused huge demonstrations of women all over Spain. The mobilisations were to show the disagreement of women with the argumentation of the judicial sentence, which didn’t consider the aggression a rape because, according to them, the victim didn’t resist the rape. Thus through a specific and paradigmatic case, nowadays internationally known, we will show how a festive context in a public space can be used to justify sexual violence against women. To do so, we conducted qualitative fieldwork that included journalistic case tracking, in-depth analysis of the instruction and accusation writings, as well as the court rulings of the case. In-depth interviews with members of the local feminist movement in Pamplona and experts on sexual violence involved in the case were also conducted.

Sonic and tactile bodies: sound, haptic space and accessibility
(Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd., 2019-07-26) Berrens, Karla
The sonic ambiance we live within is constantly morphing, echoing the changes of a rapidly changing environment. It is always on and while we may not notice it, we are perpetually exposed both to the sound and the vibrations that “ensound” our bodies. The sonic ambiance is also tactile and through this sense can connect to people’s feelings and sensations. This chapter examines characteristics from the dimensions of touch and discomfort or pain (nociception) that the sonic ambiance produces in our bodies when we navigate the city. We argue the tactile and pain dimensions of sound are important actors in the making of place for diversely functional individuals. They intervene in aspects of their spatial orientation, their connection to their emotions in and towards the space they navigate, deeply shaping their relationship to the space they inhabit and to place.

    L'aprenentatge competencial i l'ABP a l'educació superior: impactes i valoracions des de l'experiència de l'alumnat de sociologia
(Ediciones OCTAEDRO, S.L., 2024-12-30) Cano-Hila, Ana Belén; Berrens, Karla
This paper examines the potential and limitations of Problem Based Learning (PBL) methodology which has been applied, for the second year (2023-2024), to BA Sociology students in the University of Barcelona within the INNDOC “Problem Based Learning for urban sociology” educative innovation program. PBL is a methodology presenting realistic case studies to solve problems that have an open solution. The student, through some reading and guided questions, is encouraged to solve the problem presented in the way they see best. This methodology bridges a gap between the theory seen in the BA and the reality of what can be a future demand in a job. In this paper, we focus on the student’s experience with this methodology. We evaluate the outcome of this implementation through student feedback gathered at the end of the implementation through a questionnaire and an additional focus group. We conclude by noting that students value the methodology positively because of four main points: a) the relationship it fosters between theory and practice; b) working on case studies with real situations; c) the teachers as guides; d) time to work autonomously in the classroom. They also see limitations in this implementation, and those are: a) this activity requires a bigger effort than others; b) a sense of insecurity because of their lack of previous experience.

Pobreza y dependencia de la asistencia social. Un estudio de caso sobre la Renta Mínima de Inserción
(Copalqui Editorial, 2011) Camps Calvet, Clara
