El gozo del agua o el cuidado de la Abuela Lago en Atitlán (Guatemala)

[spa] Este artículo explora la relación espiritual, ecológica y política que los pueblos mayas tz’utujiles de San Pedro La Laguna mantienen con el lago Atitlán, al que consideran un ser vivo: Qatee Ya’ (nuestra madre lago). Esta relación se manifiesta en prácticas cotidianas, rituales y oníricas, y se traduce en acciones concretas de cuidado, como las realizadas por las «Guardianas del Lago», grupos de mujeres que limpian sus orillas. El texto analiza cómo esta representación maya desafía visiones tecnocráticas y extractivistas, proponiendo en su lugar una «cosmopolítica» que integra a la vez saberes ancestrales y científicos. Mediante la descripción etnográfica se muestra cómo el cuidado del lago se convierte tanto en una forma de defensa territorial como de resistencia cultural.

[eng] This article explores the spiritual, ecological, and political relationship that the Tz'utujil Maya people of San Pedro La Laguna have with Lake Atitlán, which they consider to be a living being: Qatee Ya' (our mother lake). This relationship is manifested in daily practices, rituals, and dreams, and translates into concrete actions of care, such as those carried out by the “Guardians of the Lake,” groups of women who clean its shores. The text analyzes how this Mayan representation challenges technocratic and extractivist visions, proposing instead a “cosmopolitics” that integrates both ancestral and scientific knowledge. Through ethnographic description, it shows how caring for the lake becomes both a form of territorial defense and cultural resistance.
