This doctoral thesis titled “Theatrical architecture, evergetism and urban dynamics in Hispania citerior (1st century BC – 3rd century AD)” has attempted to study eight theatres in Hispania citerior, Bilbilis, Caesaraugusta, Carthago Nova, Clunia, Pollentia, Saguntum, Segobriga and Tarraco, from an architectural, urban and economic perspective. For this purpose and to provide sufficient evidence, we have selected the best-preserved theatres. The chronological framework applied has been the beginning, development and completion of use of these constructions, ranging from the 1st century BC to the crisis of the 3rd century AD, approximately. From an architectural point of view, the analysis has specially focused on their architectural decoration, essentially bases, shafts, capitals and cornices. Based on these elements, hundreds of unpublished pieces have been studied along with other examples already published or previously examined. Fragments and/or pieces that have disappeared today. All of this has made up a catalogue of the architectural decoration of these theatres which includes photographs and current dimensions together with a description of each piece. From an urban planning approach, the study has paid attention to the importance of the construction of these buildings within a specific location of the city and a particular period in its urban development. To this end, we have provided numerous old and current maps of these cities. From an economic viewpoint, we have tried to explain the funding of theatres provided by the different powers (imperial, municipal or local elites) and their economic intervention in them. In order to achieve this, we have collected and analysed a large number of epigraphs which have made up an epigraphic annex, thus helping us to explain this issue. For all these reasons, this thesis aims to reconstruct the political, socioeconomic, and cultural context in which the phenomenon is generated and identify the possible specificities of the theatrical architecture of Hispania citerior compared to the situation in other Hispanic provinces. Furthermore, it is intended to place theatrical architecture within the general monumentalize process that affects many Hispanic cities, but not all of them. This reconstruction pursues to contribute, therefore, to delve into the modalities of urbanization and cultural change associated with the formation of a provincial Roman society, its regional particularities and its evolution in the imperial era. This in-depth study searches to develop our initial hypothesis of whether the theatres of Hispania citerior had specific characteristics which were different from the rest of the Hispanic theatres from an architectural, urban and economic perspective. For this comparative purpose, we have also included an analysis from an architectural, urban and economic point of view of the totality of theatres located in Hispania citerior as well as other significant theatres of the Western Mediterranean.
