[eng] The rules of chess grant the pawn the ability to transform into a piece with greater mobility within the game. To do so, however, it must reach the opposite end of the board—the eighth rank. The journey is long and difficult, but the pawn that finally arrives gains the ability to change its condition. Although this transformation takes place on the eighth square, it is important to recognize that it is the journey itself that propels the pawn toward this new reality—the small steps taken along the way. Similarly, on the chessboard of life, where we are all pawns, the final outcome of our game is shaped by the act of moving forward—by the steps we take each day. This project uses the figure of the chess pawn and its capacity for promotion to give form to a scuplture. The focus of the resulting work, however, lies in the moment just before the transformation—the exact instant between the pawn’s decision to become, in this case, a queen, and the transformation itself. Direct woodcarving and the use of molds and resins form the technical foundation of the piece, establishing a relationship between the materials used to emphasize the contrast between the transformative element and the chess pawn.
