The sonic ambiance we live within is constantly morphing, echoing the changes of a rapidly changing environment. It is always on and while we may not notice it, we are perpetually exposed both to the sound and the vibrations that “ensound” our bodies. The sonic ambiance is also tactile and through this sense can connect to people’s feelings and sensations. This chapter examines characteristics from the dimensions of touch and discomfort or pain (nociception) that the sonic ambiance produces in our bodies when we navigate the city. We argue the tactile and pain dimensions of sound are important actors in the making of place for diversely functional individuals. They intervene in aspects of their spatial orientation, their connection to their emotions in and towards the space they navigate, deeply shaping their relationship to the space they inhabit and to place.ca
