Abstract

Consequently, the tools for assessing and managing the risk of crime in women do not take gender-specific factors into account. With the aim of increasing the existing theoretical corpus, this work addresses the life stories of women who have committed one or more crimes and have served or are serving a prison sentence in Spain, paying special attention to the interaction between risk and protection factors as well as the key elements for criminal disengagement. The data collection technique used was the semi-structured interview and the final sample was made up of four women. Among the most notable findings are that all of them needed strong negative events to commit the criminal behavior or that, before being perpetrators, they were victims. The results found also have implications for the justice and prison system regarding the treatment given to female delinquency.
