Abstract
[eng] In the middle of the 18th century a French antique dealer, with great personal fortune and owner of a great collection of antiques, published a work in which he proposed a universal 'science of objects”. Anne-Claude-Philippe de Tubières de Grimoard de Pestels de Lévis Conde de Caylus (Paris, 1692-1765) better known today by the name of Caylus, is the central character of this work with his main work Recueil d´Antiquités égyptiennes, étrusques, grecques, romaines et gauloises (Paris, 1752-1767, 7 volumes). We study the figure of Caylus entering to the universe of antiques from art; we define its innovative work methodology, that proposed the individual and collective study of objects, from comparison and classification; and from here, we look in his work, those materials that related him with Spain and America. We are especially interested in the ideas he transmitted about the antiquarian in three places (Valencia, Barcelona and Cádiz), and the amazing random news he offered about America in a work in which in principle there were no place for them.
