Body image, shaped by beauty standards and sociocultural influences, significantly affects mental health, contributing to issues like depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Body dissatisfaction extends beyond diagnosed cases, affecting the general population. This research employs virtual reality (VR) and eye-tracking (ET) technologies to objectively analyze attentional biases before and after inducing body dissatisfaction. Hypothesizing that exposure to idealized body images increases dissatisfaction, the study reveals that women, after induction, exhibited longer fixations on areas unrelated to weight, indicating avoidance behavior. Conducted with 40 women, using VR headsets and a virtual avatar, the study exposes participants to 15 “thin ideal” images. Results, measured through questionnaires and visual analog scales, show decreased body satisfaction and longer fixations on non-weight-related areas post-induction. The findings confirm the efficacy of VR and ET technologies in objectively assessing body dissatisfaction and attentional biases. Exposure to thinideal images heightens dissatisfaction and triggers attentional biases, potentially reflecting short-term avoidance strategies. These results underscore the importance of understanding the complex relationship between body dissatisfaction and attentional biases, providing insights for future research and intervention strategies.

Standard tone stability as a manipulation of precision in the oddball paradigm: modulation of prediction error responses to fixed-probability deviants(Wiley, 2021-10-01) Costa Faidella, Jordi; San Miguel Insua, Iria; Lugo, Zulay R.; Vilella, Elisabet; Escera i Micó, CarlesElectrophysiological sensory deviance detection signals, such as the mismatch negativity (MMN), have been interpreted from the predictive coding framework as manifestations of prediction error (PE). From a frequentist perspective of the classic oddball paradigm, deviant stimuli are unexpected because of their low probability. However, the amount of PE elicited by a stimulus can be dissociated from its probability of occurrence: when the observer cannot make confident predictions, any event holds little surprise value, no matter how improbable. Here we tested the hypothesis that the magnitude of the neural response elicited to an improbable sound (D) would scale with the precision of the prediction derived from the repetition of another sound (S), by manipulating repetition stability. We recorded the Electroencephalogram (EEG) from 20 participants while passively listening to 4 types of isochronous pure tone sequences differing in the probability of the S tone (880 Hz) while holding constant the probability of the D tone [1,046 Hz; p(D) = 1/11]: Oddball [p(S) = 10/11]; High confidence (7/11); Low confidence (4/11); and Random (1/11). Tones of 9 different frequencies were equiprobably presented as fillers [p(S) + p(D) + p(F) = 1]. Using a mass-univariate non-parametric, cluster-based correlation analysis controlling for multiple comparisons, we found that the amplitude of the deviant-elicited ERP became more negative with increasing S probability, in a time-electrode window consistent with the MMN (ca. 120-200 ms; frontal), suggesting that the strength of a PE elicited to an improbable event indeed increases with the precision of the predictive model.Article
Other
Mirror exposure therapies: Effect of the distance to the mirror on the attentional pattern in a Virtual Reality immersive environment(Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2023-07-19) Meschberger-Annweiler, Franck-Alexandre; Ascione, Mariarca; Porras-García, Bruno; Miquel, Helena; Exposito, E.; Serrano Troncoso, Eduardo; Carulla Roig, Marta; Ferrer, Marta (Ferrer García); Gutiérrez Maldonado, JoséIntroduction: Mirror exposure therapies (MET) have been proposed to reduce symptomatology in patients with Anorexia Nervosa. However, most MET protocols or related studies do not specify the patients’ distance to the mirror, or when they do so, such a distance may differ significantly (from 0,5 to 3 meters). Such modifications of mirror positioning could imply variations in patients’ fixation patterns on different body parts (i.e., attentional bias between weight-related and non-weight related body parts), since previous studies shown that dissociated neural systems (either in left or right cerebral hemispheres) are involved in the attentional patterns and scanning strategies depending on the distance (i.e., in near and far space). Furthermore, as the body-related attentional bias (AB) has been shown to be a part of the maintenance mechanism of AN symptomatology, any modification of attentional patterns due to mirror’s distance variations may influence the efficacy of MET.Conference object

Predicting the impact and severity of Fibromyalgia from maladaptive personality traits(Universitat de Barcelona, 2025-07-22) Fusté Escolano, Adela; Ruiz Rodríguez, José; Krieger, Virginia; Vacas, M.Given that fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by high levels of pain and emotional stress (Gálvez-Sánchez et al., 2019), personality assessment becomes particularly relevant. This is because personality significantly influences how individuals cope with psychological stressors and adapt to chronic illnesses (Malin & Littlejohn, 2012). In this context, new perspectives on personality and its disorders support a dimensional approach, aligned with the alternative model of personality pathology proposed in both the DSM-5 (APA, 2013) and the ICD-11 (WHO, 2019). Specifically, the Livesley model has been associated from its inception with other theoretical frameworks of personality, and a convergence between the DSM-5 and ICD-11 models has been identified regarding the four dimensions of the DAPP-BQ, as detailed in Ruiz (2021).Conference object

Psychoacoustics of rock art sites: the case study of the shelters Diosa I and Horadada (Cádiz, Spain)(IEEE, 2023-09-05) López-Mochales, Samantha; Alvarez-Morales, Lidia; Santos da Rosa, Neemias; Lazarich, María; Díaz-Andreu, Margarita; Escera i Micó, CarlesThe Artsoundscapes project seeks to understand the role of acoustics in the selection by past communities of certain environments to set activities involving rock art production. Within this framework, this article addresses the subjective perception of the acoustics of two rock art sites located in Cádiz (Spain): Diosa I and Horadada. The psychoacoustics of these two rock art sites is investigated by means of two separate listening tests. In the first test, a group of participants develops a corpus of words to subjectively describe the acoustic features of the selected sites. In the second test, a different group of participants rates the descriptors assigned by the first group. The auralizations, rendered via a third order Ambisonics speaker array, consisted of ten sounds of different characteristics (including singing, speech and music) convolved with a set of impulse responses gathered at the selected sites.Conference object
Recovering the intangible acoustic heritage of rock art sites: El Tajo de las Figuras as a case study(IEEE, 2023-09-05) Alvarez-Morales, Lidia; Santos da Rosa, Neemias; Benítez Aragón, Daniel; Lazarich, María; Díaz-Andreu, MargaritaSince the end of the 19th century, scholars have highlighted the importance of rock art as a priceless heritage that may provide clues about the cultural and spiritual practices of prehistoric societies. However, most studies developed so far have focused only on the materiality of such archaeological remains. In this sense, the ERC Artsoundscapes project –funded by the European Research Council (H2020 programme, Grant Number 787842)– aims at exploring the intangible dimension of rock art sites in relation to auditory experience. Through a multidisciplinary approach comprising archaeological research, ethnomusicology, impulse response measurements, psychoacoustic tests based on auralisations and neuropsicological tests, the project investigates the role of sound and emotion in relation to the sacred by recovering the acoustic heritage of rock art sites in several rock art landscapes of the world. In this paper, we present a case study centred on the El Tajo de las Figuras (Cádiz, Spain), one of the most remarkable rock art sites of the Iberian Peninsula. The results indicate the presence of reverberation, which is especially relevant when considering its small size and, that the site is partially open. This, along with the great strength values obtained, suggests that the shelter morphology could have contributed to creating an acoustic environment suitable for reproducing certain types of music and rhythms that prehistoric people might have used in ceremonies and rituals potentially developed in this decorated space.Conference object

Personality and discomfort in a therapeutic skills training program using experiential methodology(2022-09) Fusté Escolano, Adela; Ruiz Rodríguez, José; Balaguer Fort, Gemma; Arcos, M. (Maria del Mar)One of the most useful methodologies for training therapeutic skills in the clinical and health field involves the use of experiential learning in the Role-Playing or Peer-Counselling modalities (Bennet-Levy 2006; Fusté et al., 2016; Ruiz et al., 2018). However, one of the drawbacks that this methodology can entail is the apparent discomfort of having to explain personal experiences. Different studies have suggested that the variations in the levels of distress experienced in the training programs can be associated with both aspects related to the training program, as well as personality factors. That is why the objective of this work is to analyze the relationship between the personality profile and the degree of discomfort manifested by psychologists in training when sharing personal experiences in a training environment.Conference object
