Dialogic Social Impact Analysis of Companies and Organizations (DSIACO): A pioneer model for evaluating social impact of companies and organizations
(Public Library of Science (PLoS), 2025-10-27) Joanpere Foraster, Mar; Burgués, A. (Ana); Pulido, Cristina; Aubert, Adriana; Torras-Gómez, Elisabeth; Vieites Casado, María; Soler Gallart, Marta; Flecha, Ramón
Scientific literature has clarified that companies’ social impact is crucial in improving society by optimising their performance and relationship with their stakeholders, creating long-term value. Companies are increasingly interested in assessing their social impact. For instance, applying regulatory compliance increases investors’ confidence, reputation, and image. It reduces risks and costs and improves decision-making, resilience, and talent retention. The concept of social impact and the scientific basis for evaluating and enhancing it have also been clarified and officially published by international organisations (besides the scientific literature). However, there is a lack of scientific literature on how to analyse companies’ social impact based on scientific evidence of social impact. Building upon the latest contributions of the ALLINTERACT research project, funded by the European scientific programme Horizon 2020, we have focused on analysing the social impact of companies and institutions. Our work is based on the communicative methodology of research, which pioneered the development and proposal of the criteria of social impact and co-creation. In this regard, a twofold goal is addressed in this study. On the one hand, a systematic literature review has been conducted to identify existing models of social impact evaluation for companies and organisations based on scientific evidence of social impact. On the other hand, the Dialogic Social Impact Analysis of Companies and Organisations model for assessing social impact tailored for companies and institutions is presented, which has been previously developed as a result of scientific research about social impact evaluation in different fields. The results of the systematic literature review extracted from the screening of 387 articles and analysis of 70 of those articles revealed the absence of any model developed enough to assess companies’ social impact based on scientific evidence of social impact. Existing models make critical errors like confusing social impact with transference. Hence, the DSIACO model presented in this article addresses this critical gap and drives scientific advancements in this area.

Against the “Hard Squares”: How La Verneda Reclaimed Green Space and Identity
(MDPI, 2026-01-01) Torras-Gómez, Elisabeth; Jarque Mur, Carla; Alzaga, Aitor ; Oliver Grasiot, Esther ; Ruiz Eugenio, Laura ; Soler Gallart, Marta ; Puigvert, Lídia ; Aubert, Adriana; Valls Carol, Rosa ; Flecha, Ramón; López de Aguileta Jaussi, Ane ; Melgarejo, Karol Inés; Crespo López, Alba
The scientific literature has explored the relationship between environmental justice and inequalities in the distribution and access to green spaces. This article analyses the neighbourhood of La Verneda (Barcelona) as one of the most successful cases of ecological urban transformation in Spain. Based on a Communicative Methodology approach that includes five in-depth dialogic interviews with residents and documentation from local institutions, the analysis identifies four core mechanisms driving the transformation: dialogic capacity building (through an adult education school), grassroots coalition-building (VERN and local associations), intergenerational design choices (spaces intentionally designed for mixed-age use), and symbolic place-claims (defense of the name La Verneda). These mechanisms contributed to measurable environmental and social outcomes reported by residents and illustrate how bottom-up processes can reconfigure urban planning trajectories. These findings contribute relevant lessons for contemporary ecological transitions in other urban peripheries.

Implementing citizen science activities for climate action: the I-CHANGE Day
(Frontiers Media, 2025-10-29) Esbrí, Laura; Llasat Botija, María del Carmen; Llasat-Botija, Montserrat; Sola Salvatierra, Yolanda; Racionero, Sandra
The H2020 I-CHANGE project (Individual Change of HAbits Needed for Green European transition) aims to actively engage citizens in tackling climate change through citizen science practices. To this end, I-CHANGE has collaborated with citizens and stakeholders across eight Living Labs (LLs) situated in seven countries representing diverse geographical and climatic regions. This paper presents the I-CHANGE Day, an event organized simultaneously in the eight LLs, with the aim of collecting and analyzing data on air pollution and meteorological variables through citizen science and raise public awareness on climate change and individual adaptation measures. The paper details the methodology adopted to facilitate the citizens’ participation and the implementation of the proposed activities in contrasting social and environmental settings, and the outcomes of these various citizen science activities. The two main activities implemented in the present case study were air pollution monitoring using Smart Citizen Kits (SCKs) and comparing personal temperature and humidity perception with observations acquired through MeteoTrackers sensors. The results show significant community involvement and provide useful insights for enhancing the effectiveness of international citizen science initiatives. They also highlight the importance of a co-creative process to capture different objectives and capabilities of LLs. Across all LLs, the activities presented engaged groups ranging from 8 to 60 citizens, who demonstrated high levels of interest and effectively acquired the skills to operate the low-cost sensors. This study further aims to facilitate the replication of the proposed campaign across other LLs in other areas of the globe.

“I Shall Divide and Subdivide Power”: The Fiduciary Conception of Sovereignty in Francisco Pi y Margall’s Republican Federal Project
(Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2025-06-23) Montés Mora, Jaume; Mundó Blanch, Jordi
The fiduciary conception of political power that the republican tradition adopted in its struggle against absolutism was dissolving during the late eighteenth century and the nineteenth. However, in the mid-nineteenth century, some attempts appeared that represent a reemergence of the fiduciary democratic (or proto-democratic) scheme. One of them was the case of Spanish federalism and its greatest exponent, Francisco Pi y Margall. This article shows that the core of Pimargalian federal republican thought is based on a fiduciary conception of sovereignty, which is grounded in a recovery of the language of revolutionary natural law. Migration and citizenship law in Spain: path-dependency and policy change in a recent country of immigration
(Wiley, 2012-09-01) Martín Pérez, Alberto; Moreno Fuentes, F.J.
This article analyzes the links between migratory processes and the evolution of nationality legislation in Spain. We argue that this case challenges the theoretical models that link immigration to liberalizing reforms in citizenship law. Despite large-scale immigration experienced over the last two decades, Spanish nationality law has remained strongly focused on keeping ties with Spanish communities abroad. To account for the high degree of stability of Spanish citizenship law we structure our analysis along three basic lines: the historical conceptions derived from Spain’s past as a colonial power, as well as its tradition as a country of emigration; the lack of incentives for political actors to introduce the reform of citizenship law in the political agenda; and the strategies adopted by those political actors in relation to the politicization of immigration.

What Are the Statistics That Improve Education?
(MDPI, 2025-07-01) Soler Gallart, Marta ; Avramov, Dragana ; Zoidou Saripapa, Nancy ; Melgarejo, Karol Inés ; González López, Cristian ; Troya Porras, María Belén ; Pistón-Pozo, Alba ; Oliver, Esther; Ramis Salas, Maria del Mar ; Díez Palomar, Francisco Javier ; López de Aguileta Jaussi, Garazi
There is much research on national and international statistical sources on analyses and trends of educational inequalities, which allow for a descriptive and analytical overview of a population’s educational status and trends—such as attainment levels, dropout rates, and sociodemographic variables. There is also research that has identified successful interventions across different countries that contribute to overcoming and reversing educational inequalities. However, the research on whether and how national and international statistical sources provide analyses on how to overcome and reverse educational inequalities remains underexplored. This article contributes to filling this gap by critically examining the available national and international statistical sources used in the educational field to analyze whether and how they include the necessary information for assessing the impact of specific educational interventions that overcome inequalities. Drawing on longitudinal and cohort studies within the European project REVERS-ED, the article highlights the need to move towards research models that incorporate explanatory variables and identify which interventions most effectively improve learning outcomes. Findings show that, despite widespread recognition of successful interventions, their impact is rarely reflected in official statistical systems, thereby limiting access to crucial information for teachers, policymakers, and educational institutions. Unlike disciplines such as medicine, education lacks systematic monitoring of the effects of successful interventions, making it difficult to establish clear correlations between them and learning outcomes. This paper advocates for greater accessibility to evaluative data and a shift towards applied, collaborative research that responds to the real needs of citizens, contributing to a more equitable, inclusive, and effective education system.

TOWARDS A DEGROWTH CRITIQUE OF AEROMOBILITIES: An Urban Political Ecology Perspective on the Airport Expansion Resistance in Barcelona
(Wiley, 2025-02-03) Verlinghieri, Ersilia; Martínez Moreno, Rubén; Castro, Mauro; López Martín, Alejandra
Aeromobilities—socio-technical systems that lock in dependence on fossil fuel-based mobilities—contribute substantially to climate change and uneven geographies. They represent paradigmatic capitalism-driven forms of metabolism, permeated by logics of efficiency and growth. While existing literature has examined resistance to airport expansion, it has overlooked opposition to the metabolic dimensions of aeromobility. Using an urban political ecology (UPE) lens, this paper explores resistance to aeromobility through the case of the Stay Grounded movement against the expansion of Barcelona airport. We analyse airport resistance as a critique of capitalism-driven metabolization of nature, emphasizing the interplay of material flows, territorial subjectivities and degrowth-inspired imaginaries in opposing aeromobilities and constructing alternative visions. Using semi-structured interviews and a review of activist materials, we illustrate how the Stay Grounded movement forged discoursive and strategic alliances that reterritorialized opposition to airport expansion by integrating critiques of carbon emissions with broader struggles over livelihoods and ecological preservation. We highlight how degrowth principles, combined with territorial and metabolic analyses, enabled resistance to transcend localized NIMBYism and articulate transformative visions of mobility and urban-nature relations. This article contributes to UPE scholarship by providing a critical example of infrastructure politics in the context of climate emergencies and degrowth debates.

(2025) Casado Luna, Laura; Folguera Cots, Laia; Guasch, Òscar, 1961-

Overcoming Bureaucratization. Rethinking the Social Work Model in Dialogue with Roma
(Hipatia Press, 2025-10-23) López de Aguileta Jaussi, Ane; Munté i Pascual, Ariadna
Social Work was born to find and implement actions that succeed at alleviating or overcoming human suffering. Far from this objective, the scientific literature has highlighted that, during the pandemic, the serious situation of disadvantaged communities, including much of the Roma community, has underscored the historical evolution of the discipline towards bureaucratization. However, more research is needed to identify and analyze the actions through which many Social Work professionals have had the opportunity to rethink the current hegemonic model of social intervention. This study analyzes the main characteristics of some such actions. (...)
