    Ethical Sustainability in Organizational Decision-Making
(Springer, 2026) Makki, Sonia J.; Selvam, Rejina Mary; Gil Doménech, Maria Dolors; Bastons, Miquel
Sustainable decision-making, which involves choosing alternatives that meet present needs without compromising the future, has gained significant importance in light of the increasing social and environmental concerns. This study introduces a novel framework that defines ethical sustainability in decision-making as making ethically sound and future-oriented choices grounded in realism and impartiality. These two key principles ensure that decisions are based on consideration of actual consequences and fair treatment of all affected stakeholders. The study's unique contribution lies in identifying four distinct decision-making styles: tactical altruism, emotional altruism, egoism, and ethical sustainability. While each style might appear ethical, the study argues that only decisions rooted in realism and impartiality can be considered sustainable. The study also presents a newly developed and validated measurement instrument to assess ethical sustainability in organizational decision-making, using survey data from 100 managers across sectors. The findings demonstrate satisfactory reliability and validity, revealing meaningful links between motivational drivers (intrinsic, extrinsic, and prosocial) and decision-making styles and their influence on organizational trust. As an exploratory study, this paper offers a unique framework for understanding the moral underpinnings of sustainable decision-making and lays the groundwork for future research and practical applications. We hope this contributes meaningfully to ongoing research in ethical leadership, corporate sustainability, and values-based organizational behavior.

How do emerging leaders communicate implicitly? Measuring implicit traits
(Peter Lang Group AG, 2025) Selvam, Rejina Mary
Leaders play a fundamental role in the success of organizations; names like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, or Mark Zuckerberg are world renowned, and their fame illustrates the way in which one person's influence can exert tremendous impact on the outputs of any given enterprise. It is not surprising that leadership is one of the main research topics in organizational psychology, as the discipline preoccupies itself with the understanding of what makes a good leader, and how do we detect these attributes. A search for the topic in the Scopus database reveals publications that date back to the late 19th century, and that they have steadily increased in numbers particularly after the 1960s.

Corporate Responsibility: Understanding (and Misunderstanding) of Corporate Social Responsibility, Sustainability, and Solidarity
(Springer, 2024) Thornberg, Emma Ann; Selvam, Rejina Mary; Bastons, Miquel
The primary purpose of this research is to differentiate the conceptualization of corporate sustainability (CS) from corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate solidarity. The objectives are threefold: first, we provide a literature review to show differences in the conceptualizations of the three phenomena and construct a corporate responsibility taxonomy; second, we perform a search of corporations’ annual responsibility reports and websites to investigate and analyse their understandings of CS, CSR, and solidarity, and how they apply these terms in business rhetoric; third, based on data collected from 93 different corporations, we investigate the fit between what our taxonomy of corporate responsibility declares and how corporations conceptualize CS, CSR, and solidarity. The results from this study suggest that there is a high degree of ambiguity as to what constitutes corporate responsibility. We conclude by presenting the implications of this study and suggestions for future research.

Challenges, Paradoxes and Tensions in Artistic Cooperation In (and Between) Europe and Latin America: Some Reflections and Guidelines
(DINÂMIA’CET-iscte, Artemrede —Teatros Associados and POGON—Zagreb Center for Independent Culture and Youth, 2024) Pestana, José Vicente
Cooperation projects are cardinal in the development of artistic peripheries in general—and, in particular, the artistic peripheries in which live performance primarily operates. The sense of encounter that accompanies cooperation is a little explored field that resituates the limits and ultimate meaning of who we are as artists and social beings. This contribution uses these ideas as a baseline to review challenges, paradoxes and tensions as principles that characterize—or can underpin—artistic cooperation between close and, at the same time, distant contexts, as is the case of Europe and Latin America. This paper proposes a series of guidelines, based on Jung’s Analytical Psychology, to take into account when undertaking artistic cooperation, which may be seen as a stage for human beings confronted with their own complexity as individuals.

    The process of communicating trust
(Tirant lo Blanch, 2020) Selvam, Rejina Mary
For years research has shown that teams with higher levels of trust have a propensity to be higher performers. Furthermore, many studies have discussed the significance of trust in facilitating knowledge sharing at workplaces. While the separate effects of trust and knowledge sharing on team performance is well documented, few scholars have investigated the specific links between these factors over time.

    Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
(IntechOpen, 2012-02-15) Morales, Cristina; Gordóvil Merino, Amàlia; Gómez, Jesús; Villaseñor-Cabrera, T.; Peró, Maribel; Guàrdia-Olmos, Joan, 1958-
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is most frequently diagnosed in the pediatric population. This disorder consists of short-, medium-, and long-term interruptions in development that affect performance and daily activities (Amador et al., 2002). Weiss and Trokenberg (1993) argue that adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder show poor scholastic performance, low levels of self-esteem, higher levels of alcohol and drug use, and more difficulties with social functioning when compared to children not diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Given the evidence of difficulties with response inhibition, recent studies have highlighted problems with working memory, attentive faculties (e.g., sustained attention), and response inhibition when faced with interferences (Brito et al., 1999; Déry et al., 1999; Drechsler et al., 2005; Goldberg et al., 2005; Rodríguez et al., 2009; Seidman et al., 2006; Bedard et al., 2007). The fact that these problems appear in childhood, which is a key period for establishing the foundation for future professional exploration, interests, values, attitudes, and vocational abilities (Araújo & Taveira, 2009), conveys the gravity of the situation for a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder...

Social Simulation Based on Cellular Automata: Modeling Language Shifts
(IntechOpen, 2011-04-11) Salvador Beltrán, Francesc; Herrando Borge, Salvador; Estreder, Violant; Ferreres, Doris; Adell, Marc Antoni; Ruiz-Soler, Marcos
Nowadays, language shifts (i.e., a community of speakers stops using their traditional language and speaks a new one in all communication settings) may produce a massive extinction of languages throughout the world. In this context, an important task for social sciences research should therefore be to achieve a deep comprehension of language shifts. However, modeling the social and behavioral variables that guide the social behavior of individuals and groups has traditionally been tricky in all the social sciences. In this situation, social simulation provides a tool for testing hypotheses and building models of social phenomena (see, for example, Gilbert, 1996; Gilbert & Toitzsch, 2005; and Goldspink, 2002), especially the techniques based on cellular automata theory (Hegselmann, 1996; Hegselman & Flache, 1998; Nowak & Lewenstein, 1996). According to this framewok, we introduce the properties of a cellular automaton that incorporates some assumptions from the Gaelic-Arvanitika model of language shifts (Sasse, 1992) and the findings on the dynamics of social impacts in the field of social psychology (Latané, 1981; Nowak et al. 1990). Thus, we define a cellular automaton and carry out a set of simulations in which it is used. We incorporate empirical data from recent sociolinguistic studies in Catalonia (a region in Southern Europe) to run the automaton under different scenarios. The results allow us to highlight some of the main factors involved in a language shift. Finally, we also discuss how the social simulation based on cellular automata theory approach proves to be a useful tool for understanding language shifts.
