    The Effects of Dramatic Fiction in a Catalan Baroque Re-Creation of Corneille's L'Illusion comique

    Corneille’s L’Illusion comique, published in 1639, is the basis of the mixture of genres that constitutes Lo desengany, poema dramàtic, written between 1645 and 1652 by the poet and dramatist Francesc Fontanella. While clearly inspired by Corneille’s work, the Catalan text differs substantially in the function it assigns to fiction and theatrical representation. The aim of this article will be to shed light not only on the points of connection between L’Illusion comique and Lo desengany (literally: disillusionment), but also – perhaps more importantly – on the differences between the concept of fiction and the functions assigned to this concept in the two works.

    Why agent prominence persists even under challenging conditions

    The agent of an event – the one who is performing the action – plays a central role in human cognition and in linguistic structure. Critically, the privileged role of the agent is argued to be a general phenomenon, relevant for all languages. However, in this paper, we zoom in on typological patterns that deviate from the typologically prevalent way of coding agent prominence. We focus on languages in which agents may not be marked as default and on languages that do not exhibit a general preference for placing the agent argument in sentence-initial position, namely Tima (a split ergative language) and Totoli (a language with a symmetrical voice system). Totoli also does not have a preference for linking agents to subject functions. Here we shed new light on how agent prominence is reflected in these typologically diverse languages. Furthermore, by bringing together typological studies, corpus work, and elicitation data, as well as evidence from psycholinguistic and neurophysiological studies, we conclude that agents maintain a privileged status across languages, even if typological features seem to suggest otherwise. More generally, we propose that cross-linguistic comparison – especially considering data from highly diverse languages – offers key insights into which aspects of agent prominence interact with languagespecific properties and how a concept of a general agent prominence still remains universally applicable.

    Immigration and languages in Catalonia: from policies to results

    Transnational immigration is quite a new phenomenon in Catalonia and the rest of Spain. Its sudden increase from 2000 on helps explain why immigration policies have unfolded during the last 20 years, a long-enough period to start evaluating its impact. This article reviews the framework for policies for linguistic integration of the foreign-born population in Catalonia, and explores their results through the lens of census data on these new speakers’ language abilities and practices. It shows that, in Spain, the asymmetrical distribution of competences and power between the state and sub-state levels “prevents the minority nations from developing comprehensive public policy on immigration.” Together with the unbalanced legal and economic status of Castilian and Catalan, and the demographic minorization of Catalan-speakers, this poses a challenge to the full linguistic integration of immigrants and to the sustainability of Catalan in the long run.

    A multi-layered integrative analysis reveals a cholesterol metabolic program in outer radial glia with implications for human brain evolution

    The definition of molecular and cellular mechanisms contributing to brain ontogenetic trajectories is essential to investigate the evolution of our species. Yet their functional dissection at an appropriate level of granularity remains challenging. Capitalizing on recent efforts that have extensively profiled neural stem cells from the developing human cortex, we develop an integrative computational framework to perform trajectory inference and gene regulatory network reconstruction, (pseudo)time-informed non-negative matrix factorization for learning the dynamics of gene expression programs, and paleogenomic analysis for a higher-resolution mapping of derived regulatory variants in our species in comparison with our closest relatives. We provide evidence for cell type-specific regulation of gene expression programs during indirect neurogenesis. In particular, our analysis uncovers a key role for a cholesterol program in outer radial glia, regulated by zinc-finger transcription factor KLF6. A cartography of the regulatory landscape impacted by Homo sapiens-derived variants reveals signals of selection clustering around regulatory regions associated with GLI3, a well-known regulator of radial glial cell cycle, and impacting KLF6 regulation. Our study contributes to the evidence of significant changes in metabolic pathways in recent human brain evolution.

    Pragmatic ambiguity, implicatures, and translation

    The goal of this work is to put forward a pragmatic and translational framework for analysing target texts (TT) and source texts (ST) containing conversational implicatures that lead to pragmatic ambiguity. Ambiguity, sensu lato, is deemed to be related to indeterminacy and vagueness. Nevertheless, in the strict sense, ambiguity is understood as ‘more than a single processing instruction for a given utterance’. More specifically, pragmatic ambiguity arises whenever differences in cultural conventions between SL speakers and TL speakers lead to differences in the existence, meaning and salience of implicatures among ST and TT. Using real translation cases selected from a purpose-built corpus containing fiction written and oral texts, we show which pragmatic ambiguities translators come across, and how translation techniques are used, either to maintain ambiguity or to select one intended processing instruction.

    The effect of lexical aspect and discourse grounding in the acquisition of Spanish past tense aspect by mandarin Chinese speakers: replicating the approach used in Salaberry (2011)

    In this work, we replicate the approach of Salaberry (2011). Based on an a written 40 item discourse based forced-choice task, we analyze the influence of lexical aspectual class and grounding information in discourse on the use of perfective and imperfective verbal morphology of Spanish by Chinese learners of three levels of proficiency (B1, B2, C1 of the CEFR). Our results show that the preference to use prototypical associations predicted by the LAH and the DH coincide with Salaberry's (2011) results. However, we found that our L1 Mandarin Chinese learners show a particular developmental pattern compared with the L1 English learners in Salaberry (2011).

    Ambiguity in Linguistics

    Ambiguity is conventionally defined in Linguistics as a property of a word or an utterance that has two meanings or two interpretations, and is usually classified as lexical, morphological, syntactic (or structural), and pragmatic. Giving an adequate definition of linguistic ambiguity is not trivial, nor is there unanimity in accepting it. Most researchers tend to agree that ambiguity should be distinguished from related concepts such as vagueness, context sensitivity, reference transfer, and underdetermination or generality of meaning. The distinction between these concepts is also related to the divergences or connections between the perspectives of analysis of ambiguity, and the aim of each work. In this introduction, we define the limits of ambiguity with respect to related concepts and summarize the studies contained within this special issue. These studies do not cover all possible approaches to linguistic ambiguity, but provide a broad overview that can be useful in different fields. We trust that they will contribute to deepening into a phenomenon that is not yet well described and that seems to be consubstantial with the use of language.

    NewsCom-TOX: A corpus of comments on news articles annotated for toxicity in Spanish

    In this article, we present the NewsCom-TOX corpus, a new corpus manually annotated for toxicity in Spanish. NewsCom-TOX consists of 4359 comments in Spanish posted in response to 21 news articles on social media related to immigration, in order to analyse and identify messages with racial and xenophobic content. This corpus is multi-level annotated with different binary linguistic categories -stance, target, stereotype, sarcasm, mockery, insult, improper language, aggressiveness and intolerance- taking into account not only the information conveyed in each comment, but also the whole discourse thread in which the comment occurs, as well as the information conveyed in the news article, including their images. These categories allow us to identify the presence of toxicity and its intensity, that is, the level of toxicity of each comment. All this information is available for research purposes upon request. Here we describe the NewsCom-TOX corpus, the annotation tagset used, the criteria applied and the annotation process carried out, including the inter-annotator agreement tests conducted. A quantitative analysis of the results obtained is also provided. NewsCom-TOX is a linguistic resource that will be valuable for both linguistic and computational research in Spanish in NLP tasks for the detection of toxic information.

    Dedialectalisation of intonational patterns of yes-no questions in León, Zamora, Salamanca, and Palencia

    This work studies intonational patterns of yes-no questions of five speakers from the provincial capitals of León, Zamora, Salamanca, Palencia and Valladolid using the Sp_ToBI annotation system. For the provinces studied, a co-occurrence of descending (L%) and rising (H%) question patterns is found. These patterns correspond to a traditional pattern and to the pattern of standard Spanish respectively, so the coexistence of both will lead us to propose a process of standardisation or dedialectalisation that is affecting the intonational patterns of the varieties of these peripheral territories in the northwest of Castile.

    Tries lingüístiques en un debat electoral: la lluita per l’anonimat lingüístic

    [cat] Aquest article explora les tries lingüístiques de diversos candidats polítics a partir de l’anàlisi quantitativa de les intervencions en un debat organitzat per TV3 amb motiu de les eleccions del 10 de novembre de 2019 a les Corts espanyoles. S’estudien les ideologies lingüístiques dels diferents partits polítics amb base al seu programa electoral i tenint en compte la influència d’altres fenòmens com el disseny de l’auditori, la lleialtat lingüística o la convergència lingüís-tica per tal de determinar què condiciona la tria lingüística en un context altament polaritzat i mediat. Els resultats mostren un punt d’inflexió en l’ús del català com a llengua hegemònica, principal i anònima en el debat polític a Catalunya, amb la irrupció de forces que reclamen el castellà com a llengua anònima i que rebutgen el català com a llengua comuna.

    Combining SPE and OT in descriptive language-oriented courses

    This paper discusses a range of pedagogical strategies that can be used to introduce phonological theory in Catalan Philology BA degrees, which have an empirical and descriptive orientation. On the basis of voicing-related phenomena and vowel reduction processes in Catalan, we illustrate how fundamental concepts can be introduced and how an SPE-type rule-based approach and Optimality Theory can be incorporated in this type of descriptive courses. We also assess the advantages and drawbacks of SPE vs. OT-framed treatments. The fact that the whole grammar of a given language is taken into consideration represents a challenge for any theoretical model, and also for the instructor and students, because the analysis cannot be restricted to a limited set of data; rather, all data that characterize a grammatical system must be taken into account. However, this enterprise is possible if SPE and OT are combined in class, since the pedagogical disadvantages of one model can be counterbalanced by the advantages of the other, and vice versa.

    Sol, i de dol com a procés de coneixement postsimbolista

    El poemari Sol, i de dol es planteja estructuralment com un procés de coneixement de la realitat individual, històrica i metafísica. Per això, alhora que un examen dels mecanismes universalment comuns de relació entre la consciència humana i el món, du a terme una revisió de la constitució de la cultura i la societat catalanes modernes entre els anys 1913 –el de la publicació de les normes ortogràfiques de l’IEC– i 1923 –el de l’inici de la dictadura de Primo de Rivera– feta des dels anys trenta –quan s’ha arribat a una situació contrària a la d’aquells anys que desembocarà en una guerra civil. I, encara, el llibre també es presenta com el viatge iniciàtic mitjançant el qual J.V. Foix construeix la pròpia posició poètica dins del postsimbolisme –que es du a terme durant aquests mateixos anys i fins al 1927, el de la publicació del seu primer llibre. L’establiment d’aquesta estructura és indestriable de l’ús simbòlic dels números i les dates que fa Sol, i de dol, així com els seus principals intertextos –els diàlegs de Plató, Confessions de Sant Agustí, Divina comèdia de Dante, Canzoniere de Petrarca, La paraula en el vent i altres poemaris de Carner i Primer llibre d’estances de Riba.

    Towards a historical dialectal approach to differential object marking in Catalan

    This paper offers a description of the emergence and development of Differential Object Marking (DOM) in Old Catalan, focusing on the per- spective of historical dialectology and thus paying special attention to the di- alectal differences that emerge. It does so by means of a large corpus study comprising the period from the first written texts to the 18th century. Al- though, in present-day Catalan, DOM is widespread with human direct ob- jects in most dialects, its use is generally rejected by prescriptive grammar, as the phenomenon has often been attributed to Spanish influence. However, diachronic findings point to an analysis of DOM in Catalan as a fruit of the internal evolution of the language: instances of the phenomenon with hu- man direct objects are found in earlier Catalan texts. Spanish influence (re- lated to a series of sociopolitical events) only comes into play later, causing an exponential increase of the frequency of DOM in Catalan. Interestingly, consistent geolectal differences can be observed when analysing Old Cata- lan texts, with Valencian texts offering the highest number of occurrences. In this context, one must take into consideration the influence of Aragonese in Valencia (people from Aragon repopulated the area) as well as Spanish, whose effects in the Catalan-speaking area became particularly prevalent es- pecially from the 16th century onwards. The conclusions of this study aim to provide empirically and theoretically informed research not only to identify historical dialects within Romance languages – in this case Catalan – but also to pave the way for more studies on historical comparative dialectology. As a matter of fact, in this study, the status of DOM in Old Spanish and Old Aragonese has also been taken into account.

    Gramàtica comparada a l’aula. Una proposta per als llibres de text

    Aquest article presenta l’experiència de Gramàtica comparada a l’aula, que constitueix una iniciativa per introduir als llibres de text de llengua catalana de l’educació secundària obligatòria un enfocament de l’ensenyament gramatical a partir de la comparació del català amb altres llengües. Els materials que presentem han estat publicats en els llibres de text Llengua Catalana i Literatura. Construïm de l’editorial Cruïlla, de 1r a 4t d’ESO, en forma d’activitats addicionals a les pàgines dedicades a l’ensenyament de la gramàtica. Es tracta d’un projecte que pretén desvetllar l’interès dels alumnes pel funcionament de les gramàtiques de les seves llengües a través de la mobilització d’un seguit d’estratègies que van més enllà del saber teòric o de l’ensenyament mecànic de la gramàtica i que es nodreixen de la realitat de l’aula entesa com a espai multilingüe. La iniciativa parteix de l’explotació de les intuïcions i del patrimoni lingüístic dels alumnes com a coneixedors de diverses llengües per tal de captar l’atenció sobre diferents aspectes de la gramàtica, a partir d’exercicis basats en un ventall d’estratègies que inclou els parells mínims, la construcció d’exemples o l’anàlisi de seqüències agramaticals.

    Qüestions terminològiques en l'ensenyament de la gramàtica catalana: els verbs transitius i la distinció argument/adjunt

    Aquest article explora un seguit de qüestions terminològiques rellevants referides a l’ensenyament de la gramàtica de la llengua catalana en l’educació secundària. Primer analitzem la dicotomia transitiu/intransitiu i examinem les implicacions que tenen les definicions que es proposen d’aquests termes a l’hora de comprendre el funcionament de la gramàtica, amb una atenció especial sobre els verbs transitius i la presència d’un objecte directe. En segon lloc, indaguem la dicotomia entre argument i adjunt centrant-nos en el cas dels complements de companyia i els de lloc. El nostre objectiu és destriar els que són arguments (altrament anomenats complements de règim) i els que són adjunts (terme equiparable a complement circumstancial).  En ambdós casos, després de contextualitzar els termes i les nocions que s’examinen, proposem de quina manera es poden traslladar a l’aula de secundària, i oferir així mateix diversos exercicis que permetran aprofundir en l’estudi dels temes explorats.

    Hybrid intransitives in Basque

    This paper deals with a group of agentive verbs in Eastern dialects of Basque that show mixed unergative and unaccusative properties. Although they pattern with unergatives in certain aspects, they combine with an absolutive subject and the auxiliary ‘be’, contrary to what one would expect for Basque unergative verbs. Additionally, they behave like unaccusatives in a number of other tests, such as in their inability to take cognate objects and in allowing partitive subjects. The analysis put forward in this paper accounts for the hybrid nature of these verbs. In particular, we claim that their subject is introduced in the specifier of vP, and that it is co-indexed with a thematic but non-pronounced argument of Voice. As a consequence, the subject shows both external and internal properties. This paper thus challenges the mutually exclusive external/internal division of the subject in intransitive verbs and argues that intransitive verbs can be classified into more groups than just two, as also argued elsewhere. Additionally, it argues that the different types of intransitive verbs are grammatically encoded and shaped by different versions of Voice and v. Thus, this analysis assumes the typology of Voice proposed by Schäfer (2008) and developed by Alexiadou, Anagnostopoulou and Schäfer (2015), and extends it to the functional head v.

    Literatura i promoció social: lectura i creació literàries entre els menestrals catalans medievals

    Aquest article reivindica el paper actiu dels menestrals com a consumidors (lectors, posseïdors, copistes) i autors de literatura, al costat dels cercles de l’elit i de la cort, i el relaciona amb les estratègies de promoció social que aquest dinàmic sector va endegar. L’anàlisi es fonamenta en dos tipus de fonts: d’una banda, en una extensa mostra de la presència d’obres literàries en les biblioteques de la petita burgesia catalana medieval, a partir de les principals col·leccions documentals sobre història del llibre produïdes fins ara; i, d’altra banda, en alguns còdexs literaris copiats per individus pertanyents a aquest àmbit social, que han estat reexaminats. A més, s’hi identifiquen alguns personatges relacionats amb la transmissió d’algunes obres de Francesc Eiximenis (el Llibre de les dones i el Llibre dels àngels) i amb la de la traducció catalana de La Queste del saint Graal, i també amb l’origen de la traducció de Jaume Conesa de la Historia destructionis Troie de Guido delle Colonne.

    Vernacular surgery in the medieval and early modern Latin West: works, individuals, and research methodologies

    One of the most surprising aspects of the history of surgery in the medieval and early modern periods is the intense use of vernacular languages in the dissemination of treatises on the subject, via translations, and even in the writing of originals. This vernacularization of surgery began in the thirteenth century and is closely associated with the creation of a new medical system in the Latin West and with the birth of a rational “new surgery”, linked to Galenism, to school education, and to the transmission of knowledge in books. This article presents a summary of this interrelationship and the role played by the vernacularization of surgery in the success of these processes, and it upholds the need for an interdisciplinary research methodology in order to gain an overall understanding of it.

    Auxiliary selection across Catalan dialects: an overview

    This article presents a comprehensive description of auxiliary selectionin Catalan. Specifically, after explaining how the phenomenon worked in OldCatalan, we show what are the factors (such as the event/argument structure or thegrammatical person, among others) that determine the use of BE and HAVE in thoseCatalan varieties that, although with some innovations, retain this distinction: (i)Algherese Catalan, (ii) Northern Catalan and some varieties of Central Catalan, (iii)Ribagorçan Catalan, and (iv) Balearic Catalan. Likewise, we show a series oftheoretical considerations that we believe are relevant for the analysis of the patternsof variation found in Catalan and, by extension, in Romance.
