Image Generation via Drifting(2026-06-10) Yao Chen, Xu; Vitrià i Marca, Jordi[eng] Most state-of-the-art generative models that achieve high sample quality, from image systems such as Stable Diffusion 3 to video systems such as Meta's Movie Gen, pay for it at inference time: producing a single sample requires simulating a differential equation over tens to hundreds of sequential network evaluations (Stable Diffusion 3, for instance, uses fifty). This work studies drifting, a recently proposed framework that instead concentrates the cost in training and generates each sample in a single forward pass. It trains the generator to follow a drifting field: a kernel-based vector field that pulls each generated sample toward the real data and away from the other generated samples. We develop the mathematical foundations of this framework, characterising when its drifting field vanishes. We then implement the method as a class-conditional transformer (DriftDiT) and evaluate one-step generation on MNIST and Fashion-MNIST, reaching Fréchet Inception Distances of 3.86 and 7.64 respectively.
Criptosistema McEliece en el context postquàntic(2026-06-10) Ruiz Caballol, Iris; Guitart Morales, Xavier[eng] The aim of this project is to study and implement the McEliece cryptosystem. First, the necessary concepts from error-correcting code theory and linear codes are introduced. Generalized Reed-Solomon codes are then examined, leading to the definition of alternant codes and Goppa codes, which play a fundamental role in the original McEliece construction. The cryptosystem itself is subsequently described, and the Sidelnikov–Shestakov attack is analysed. Finally, the post-quantum security of McEliece is discussed, together with its main advantages and practical limitations, and a computational implementation of the studied algorithms is presented.
Generative Modelling via Drifting: Efficient One-Step Image Generation(2026-06-06) Royo San Miguel, Christian; Vitrià i Marca, Jordi[eng] Generative modelling can be interpreted as learning a map $f$ that pushes a simple noise distribution $p_\varepsilon$ forward to the data distribution $p_{\text{data}}$. State-of-the-art generators based on diffusion or flow matching perform this push iteratively, simulating an SDE or ODE during inference and involving tens to hundreds of function evaluations. Recent work on Multisample Flow Matching and Rectified Flow reduces this cost by straightening the learned trajectories, but the additional reflow stages multiply the training budget significantly. Deng et al. (2026) recently introduced Drifting Models, a paradigm that avoids iterative inference completely: rather than learning a vector field over time, the generator is trained so that its output distribution evolves during training towards $p_{\text{data}}$, driven by a drifting field that vanishes precisely when the two distributions match. Sampling at inference reduces to a single forward pass. This thesis develops the mathematical foundations of the drifting framework (particle dynamics, RKHS theory, Maximum Mean Discrepancy, and the derivation of the drifting field as the gradient of an MMD objective) and ports the method to the MLX framework on Apple Silicon. We evaluate the resulting onestep generator on MNIST under three progressively richer architectures (MLP, naïve UNet, and UNet with training-level stabilisers), reaching a feature-space FID of 78.87 and a strict recognition rate of 63.3% after roughly 45 minutes of training on a consumer laptop, without class conditioning. The experiments confirm that the drifting framework can be reproduced on a consumer laptop in under an hour of training while preserving the qualitative behaviour reported in the original paper.
Introduction to the cos method for option pricing(2026-06-09) Navarra Paños, Guillem; Vitrià i Marca, Jordi; Vives i Santa Eulàlia, Josep, 1963-The main goal of this work is to introduce the COS method, a Fourier–cosine series based technique for the fast numerical pricing of financial options. We start from the basic financial and mathematical ideas needed to understand option pricing, including derivative contracts, risk-neutral valuation, the Fundamental Theorem of Asset Pricing, Brownian motion, and the Black-Scholes framework. After that, we introduce Fourier methods and explain why characteristic functions are useful when the distribution of the asset price is not handled directly. The project then focuses on the derivation and implementation of the COS method. The method is presented through the truncation interval, the model characteristic function, the payoff coefficients, and the finite cosine sum. We apply it first to the Black-Scholes model, where a closed-form formula is available and can be used as a benchmark. Then we extend the numerical study to the Heston and Bates models, where the characteristic function approach is especially useful. Finally, the method is implemented in Python and tested through several numerical experiments. The results show that the COS method achieves very high accuracy with a relatively small number of terms, while Monte Carlo simulation needs many more paths to reduce the error. This makes the COS method a powerful and efficient alternative for option pricing, especially in models where closed-form prices are not directly available. Notation: Throughout this work, $i$ denotes the imaginary unit, $\mathbb{R}$ the real line, and FTAP the Fundamental Theorem of Asset Pricing. We write $S_t$ for the price of the underlying asset at time $t$, $S_0$ for its initial value, $S_T$ for its value at maturity, $K$ for the strike price, and $T$ for the time to maturity. The risk-free interest rate is denoted by $r$, the dividend yield by $q$, and the volatility by $\sigma$. Brownian motion is denoted by $W_t$. When logarithmic variables are used in the COS method, we write $$x=\log\left(\frac{S_0}{K}\right), \qquad y=\log\left(\frac{S_T}{K}\right).$$ The characteristic function of the model is denoted by $\phi$, and its Fourier variable is denoted by $\omega$ or $u$. The interval $[a,b]$ is the truncation interval used in the COS approximation, $c_n$ denotes the cumulants of the log-price, and $N$ is the number of terms in the finite cosine expansion. The payoff coefficients are denoted by $V_k$ or $U_k$, depending on the notation used in the corresponding section.Treball de fi de grau
Euler-Flow Activations in Neural ODEs(2026-06-09) Gràvalos Talló, Bruna; Haro, Àlex; Ruiz-Balet, DomènecThis thesis investigates whether using velocity fields derived from incompressible Euler equations as activation functions in residual neural networks offers advantages over using ReLUs for spatially structured classification tasks. The motivation for this study comes from two specific theoretical observations. Firstly, recent work has shown that approximating measure-preserving maps with ReLU perceptrons requires a large number of compositions that grows with the desired precision. Secondly, Arnold’s theorem identifies the geodesics of the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms as flows of the incompressible Euler equations. To test this hypothesis, three explicit families of solutions to the Euler equations in two dimensions are compared against ReLU and Siren on three two-dimensional classification tasks, with the number of parameters matched across all architectures. The results support the hypothesis for the main architecture tested: every non-ReLU activation outperforms ReLU by between ten and twenty-five percentage points across all tasks and seeds. However, further work is required to extend this result to deeper and more complex architectures.Treball de fi de grau
Modelització estocàstica de la sinistralitat(2026-06-10) Zhang, Hao; Vives i Santa Eulàlia, Josep, 1963-[eng] This Bachelor’s Thesis explores the mathematical foundations of risk theory applied to the insurance sector. The main objective is to rigorously model the total cost of a policy portfolio by breaking it down into two fundamental variables: claim frequency (studied through Poisson and renewal processes) and claim severity. The thesis grounds these concepts in a practical application using real-world auto insurance data from France. This practical application exposes the real-world impact of extreme claims, commonly known as "heavy tails". It empirically demonstrates how this extreme skewness causes classical analytical approximations to fail, leading to the mathematical collapse of models like the Translated Gamma when calculating the Solvency Capital Requirement (VaR). As a solution, a reinsurance treaty is applied and evaluated to truncate the tail of the distribution, thereby stabilizing the portfolio’s risk and allowing for a coherent calculation of premiums and safety margins. Altres
Teorema de Harnack(2026-06-10) Vives Muñoz, Ester; Naranjo del Val, Juan Carlos[eng] This work is centred on Harnack’s theorem for nonsingular real projective plane curves. To reach this result, it starts from the theory of affine and projective plane curves and their relation with Riemann surfaces. In particular, it studies how a real curve can also be considered over the complex numbers, which allows one to associate to it a compact Riemann surface. Along the way, the notions of intersection and intersection multiplicity of curves are introduced, leading to Bézout’s theorem. The work also studies morphisms between Riemann surfaces and the Hurwitz formula, which is used to compute the genus of a nonsingular projective plane curve. With these tools, Harnack’s inequality is presented: it bounds the number of connected components of the real part of a curve by the genus of its complexification plus one. This bound is studied from two points of view: a more algebraic one, based on Bézout’s theorem, and a more topological one, based on complex conjugation and homology. The work ends by indicating how this result leads naturally to the question of not only how many components a real curve can have, but also how these components can be arranged in the real projective plane, a question related to Hilbert’s sixteenth problem.
Del joc de Hex al teorema de Jordan-Schönflies(2026-06-10) Vilchez Costa, Àlex; García López, Ricardo, 1962-[eng] This work demonstrates D. Gale’s Hex theorem, which is utilized to prove the Brouwer fixed-point theorem and, subsequently, the Jordan curve theorem following the approach of R. Maehara. Then, building primarily upon the works of R. H. Bing and S. S. Cairns, the Jordan–Sch¨onflies extension is achieved. This nexus between board games and abstract mathematics converges across disciplines such as graph theory, analysis, and, most notably, algebraic topology.
Es distingeixen estudis experimentals i observacionals. [eng] This work presents a theoretical introduction to causal inference. The common thread of the dissertation is the distinction between association and causation: observational data may show regularities, but they do not by themselves determine what would happen under an intervention or what would have happened in a counterfactual scenario. Based on this motivation, and through the different layers of Pearl’s causal hierarchy, we develop Pearl’s structural causal models, causal Bayesian networks, d-separation, and the problem of identifying causal effects. The Neyman-Rubin potential outcomes framework is also studied, along with the fundamental problem of causal inference, the most commonly used estimands, and the role of the assignment mechanism. The work places special emphasis on the connection between these two frameworks and on the conditions that allow transforming a causal question into an estimable expression from observational data. Experimental and observational studies are distinguished. Before studying the case of Berkeley admissions, these identification algorithms and Simpson’s paradox are studied. We show how the permitted inferences depend on the causal question and the assumed model.Treball de fi de grau
Non-autonomous iteration in the unit disk(2026-06-10) Velasco Solé, Teresa; Jové Campabadal, Anna[eng] In this project we deal with discrete holomorphic dynamical systems defined on the unit disk $D$, and we present the main results concerning the long-term behaviour of orbits. First, in the autonomous case, where a single self-map is iterated, the Denjoy-Wolff Theorem asserts that, unless the map is an elliptic automorphism, the iterates converge to a single point of $\overline{\mathbb{D}}$. Second, in the non-autonomous setting, we consider a sequence of holomorphic self-maps $f_n : \mathbb{D} \to \mathbb{D}$ fixing the origin, and study how the hyperbolic distance between two orbits evolves as $n \to \infty$. Only three behaviours are possible: the distance may tend to $0$ (contracting), tend to a positive limit that is never attained (semi-contracting), or become constant from some step onwards (eventually isometric); and which case occurs is determined by the derivatives $\alpha_n = |f_n'(0)|$.
L'equació d'ones: una guia per al jove matemàtic a l'orquestra(2026-06-10) Vallès Martínez, Pau; Sanz Perela, Tomás[eng] This bachelor’s thesis explores the mathematical foundations and physical applications of the wave equation as a fundamental tool for understanding the acoustics of orchestral instruments. The work is structured in three parts, progressing from the theory of partial differential equations (PDEs) to the mathematical modeling of musical instruments. First, the one-dimensional wave equation is introduced through its derivation from a vibrating string. Fundamental properties such as existence, uniqueness, stability, and the effects of friction are established, and classical solution methods including d’Alembert’s formula, separation of variables, and Duhamel’s principle are presented. Second, the study extends to higher dimensions using the Spectral Theorem for the Dirichlet Laplacian and Hilbert bases. Solutions on circular and spherical domains lead naturally to Bessel functions and spherical harmonics. The relationship between geometry and vibration spectra is examined through different boundary conditions and the inverse problem “Can one hear the shape of a drum?”. Finally, the theoretical framework is applied to three major families of orchestral instruments. Percussion instruments are modeled through membrane and beam vibrations, wind instruments through the wave equation and Webster’s horn equation, and string instruments through the classical model of a vibrating string with fixed endpoints. Overall, this work illustrates how advanced mathematical analysis connects abstract PDE theory with the physical mechanisms underlying musical sound production.
Estudi de fluxos i aplicacions 3D preservant volum: el sistema ABC(2026-06-10) Ulloa Ruiz, Ferran; Vieiro Yanes, Arturo; Murillo López, Ainoa[eng] This work begins by presenting basic theoretical notions about 3D flows, and some of the properties they can exhibit, such as chaos, 2D tori, and their role in dynamics. We will study the existence and effect of symmetries on the parameters and orbits of the ABC flow. Subsequently, we will construct a numerical method to visualize the orbits of the ABC flow by means of a Poincaré section. Next, we will address the transition from flows to 3D maps using Poincaré maps, as well as some of their characteristics, such as integrability, action-angle coordinates, and resonances. Finally, we will use a computer program to visualize the orbits of the ABC map for various parameter values through the use of slices.
On Multidimensional Persistence(2026-06-10) Trias Terol, Jan; D'Andrea, Carlos, 1973-The main goal of this project is the study of Multidimensional Persistence. We begin by reviewing Persistent Homology, a well-studied tool in Topological Data Analysis that completely classifies filtered spaces through a discrete invariant, the barcode. We then discuss some recent advancements made in this field using Commutative Algebra, namely persistent ideals and a new (more powerful) barcode, introduced in [14]. Next, we carefully thread through Multidimensional Persistence theory, a generalization of Persistent Homology, that identifies multifiltrations with multigraded multivariate polynomial ring modules, stating a fundamental result (the Zomorodian-Carlsson correspondence, Theorem 3.5) and showing that, unlike the single-dimensional case, no complete discrete invariant exists for the multidimensional case. We end the discussion with a brief commentary on the classification of the objects studied. Finally, we give a result of our own, a generalization of the advancements made in [14] for the multidimensional case.Treball de fi de grau
El Teorema de Mordell i la seva demostració: corbes el·líptiques i cohomologia de Galois(2026-06-09) Torrent Cortada, Júlia; Guitart Morales, Xavier[eng] This work studies elliptic curves over the rational numbers, focusing on the statement and proof of Mordell’s Theorem. This result states that the group of rational points of an elliptic curve is finitely generated. The proof is divided into two parts: first, the Weak Mordell Theorem is proved using techniques from Galois Cohomology, and then this result is used to deduce Mordell’s Theorem. Finally, the theory developed throughout the work is applied to a concrete example illustrating its main results.
The Radon Transform and Its Application to Computed Tomography(2026-06-01) Sorrentino Rodríguez, Agustín A.; Antezana, JorgeThis work studies the mathematical foundations of computerized tomography from the point of view of the Radon transform. Starting from the physical interpretation of X-ray measurements as line integrals, we introduce the main analytical tools needed to formulate the reconstruction problem, including Fourier analysis, distributions, sampling theory and the Fourier slice theorem. We then discuss several inversion procedures, with special emphasis on filtered backprojection and Fourier-based reconstruction methods. Following the approach of Cascante et al., we also describe a gridding method for the numerical recovery of images from discrete projection data. The final part of the work analyzes the computational structure of the algorithm and the role of sampling, interpolation and filtering in practical reconstruction. Overall, the aim is to show how the continuous theory of the Radon transform leads naturally to implementable algorithms for medical image reconstruction.Treball de fi de grau
Les aplicacions quasiconformes i el Teorema Mesurable de Riemann(2026-06-09) Sitjà Castellarnau, Isabel; Clop, Albert[eng] This thesis studies quasiconformal mappings and the Measurable Riemann Mapping Theorem, one of the fundamental results in the theory of quasiconformal mappings. The theorem guarantees the existence and uniqueness of a quasiconformal mapping associated with a measurable and uniformly bounded Beltrami coefficient. The main goal of this dissertation is to present a detailed proof of this result. To achieve this, several preliminary tools from real, complex, functional and harmonic analysis are developed. In particular, Sobolev spaces and some results concerning weakly differentiable homeomorphisms are introduced, together with the Cauchy and Beurling integral transforms, which play a central role in the study of the Beltrami equation. In addition, the basic theory of quasiconformal and quasisymmetric mappings is presented, with special emphasis on their analytic and geometric characterizations. Finally, by combining the results developed throughout the thesis, a proof of the Measurable Riemann Mapping Theorem is obtained. The uniqueness of solutions is established through the Stoilow factorization theorem, which provides a structural description of the solutions to the Beltrami equation.
Dinàmica de l’arquitectura Transformer: Del pas discret a la modelització contínua(2026-06-10) Singh Kaur, Arshdeep; Ruiz-Balet, Domènec[eng] In this document we study the Transformer architecture from a mathematical viewpoint, interpreting it as a particle system, to model the trajectory of the tokens we derive a first order differential equation, and we construct an energy function to obtain a second order dynamics as the continuous limit of a method called Hamiltonian (Symplectic Euler). We relate this dynamics to Polyak’s heavy-ball method and analyze its behavior. Finally, we validate the results with numerical simulations and explore the clustering.
On Time-Frequency Localization: Gabor Frames and the Balian-Low Theorem(2026-06-09) Seguí Blanes, Gerard; Massaneda Clares, Francesc Xavier[eng] This work studies time-frequency localization in the context of signal analysis. More precisely, it focuses on the Fourier transform, the short-time Fourier transform, and Gabor systems as tools to represent signals in both time and frequency. Special attention is given to the limitations imposed by the uncertainty principle and the Balian-Low theorem, which show that a signal representation cannot be simultaneously discrete, orthonormal, and well localized in time and frequency. Finally, the work presents Gabor frames as a natural alternative to orthonormal bases, emphasizing the role of Gaussian windows and the density condition for stable reconstruction.
Representation Theory and Structure of Semisimple Lie Algebras(2026-06-10) Sancho Corsín, Irene; Marchesi, Simone[eng] This work focuses on Lie algebras and representation theory, a field of mathematics that was born in the 19th century and remains relevant today in areas such as differential geometry, number theory, and physics. This dissertation covers several topics. We introduce matrix Lie groups, a specific type of Lie groups, as well as the concept of the Lie algebra associated with them and, more generally, the Lie algebra of an arbitrary Lie group. Next, we introduce the concept of representation. We study and prove the structure of finite-dimensional, complex, irreducible representations of the Lie algebra $sl(2;\mathbb{C})$, which is necessary for understanding the structure of semisimple Lie algebras. After introducing Cartan subalgebras, roots and root space decomposition, we state and prove the main theorem of this work. This theorem states that every finite-dimensional, complex, semisimple Lie algebra admits a simple system of roots, a fundamental result in the structure theory of semisimple Lie algebras.
