Institutional communication in higher music education institutions: a comparative study between Spain and the internactional context(Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2025) Urpí-Cámara, Montserrat; Guallar, Javier; Rey-Martín, CarinaThis article analyses the management of institutional communication in Spanish higher music education institutions, comparing it with leading international institutions. Its objective is to identify differences and similarities in the structure, resources, strategies, and functions of communication departments to detect areas for improvement and propose recommendations to optimise their impact and institutional projection. The research adopts a quantitative approach based on an online questionnaire completed by 40 national and international institutions. The questionnaire comprises 38 closed and open-ended questions, addressing the composition of communication departments, their objectives, the channels employed, strategic planning, and performance evaluation. These data are compared to identify trends and divergences in communication management. The findings reveal significant differences: international institutions have more structured departments, specialised teams, and greater investment in communication, whereas Spanish institutions exhibit a lower degree of strategic planning and resource limitations. International institutions prioritise reputation management, international projection, and impact assessment, while Spanish centres focus primarily on student recruitment and the dissemination of activities. Furthermore, international institutions diversify their communication channels and employ advanced analytical tools, whereas a more traditional approach prevails in Spain. This study provides a novel comparative perspective on institutional communication in higher music academic institutions, a field that remains largely unexplored in academic literature.Article
A practice already in use: a snapshot survey on the use of doxycycline as a preventive strategy (Doxy-PEP and Doxy-PrEP) in the GBMSM population in Spain(Springer Verlag, 2024-06-08) Villanueva Baselga, Sergio; Mora, Rubén; Villegas, LuisPurpose While doxycycline shows promise as a preventative measure against certain STIs (post-exposure prophylaxis or PEP, and pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP), very few medical and scientific associations favor its community use. Nevertheless, sexual health organizations for gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) community have noticed an increase in requests of its use. MethodsThe sexual health organization “Stop Sida” in Spain launched an anonymous snapshot survey to evaluate the current use of doxycycline as prevention strategy (both PEP and PrEP) in Spain through its social networks and its support groups in telegram. Results150 valid answers were obtained from different parts of Spain. 82 respondents (54,6% of total) had ever taken doxycycline, out of which 29 (35,4%) indicated the use as doxy-PEP and 7 (8,5%) as doxy-PrEP. The self-reported rate of STI diagnoses (mainly of syphilis and chlamydia) in the past 12 months was lower among those participants who reported having used doxy-PEP compared with those who did not report using doxy-PEP. The most common ways to obtain the doxycycline were telling a specialist that they have had a risky contact or by using leftover pills from a previous treatment. ConclusionThe current study is the first study to describe the use of doxycycline as a preventive strategy among the GBMSM community in Spain, and the first designed, launched and analyzed entirely by an NGO dealing with sexual health for the GBMSM community. The results obtained are aligned with other studies in other parts of Europe, such as GermanyArticle
Article
A Call to Action: Seven recommendations to boost public engagement and decision-making on climate change(Copernicus Publications, 2025) Molina, Tomàs, 1963-; Abadal, ErnestDespite the Paris Agreement’s ambitious targets, global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement climate adaptation measures are insufficient. This paper argues that effective public engagement and informed decision-making are critical to closing the gap between current practices and necessary actions. We identify key communication challenges that impede climate action and propose seven recommendations to strengthen public understanding and empower decision-makers. Through a multi-level study that examines the perspectives of science communicators, policymakers, and IPCC contributors, we highlight strategies for effective communication, the need for optimism in messaging, and the importance of education and grassroots actions. We advocate for an adaptation-first approach to catalyze mitigation efforts and promote a coordinated communication strategy to counter misinformation and drive climate action.Article
Article
The impact of gambling advertising on gambling severity: a path analysis of factors of psychological distress in individuals with gambling disorder(Frontiers Media SA, 2025-03-14) López Gonzàlez, Hibai; Granero, Roser; Fernández Aranda, Fernando; Griffiths, Mark D.; Jiménez-Murcia, SusanaBackground There is a consensus in the literature that gambling advertising disproportionately affects those experiencing higher gambling severity. However, the relationship of gambling advertising and severity is typically assessed among samples recruited from online panels using screening tools as the method to categorize the gambling severity status of participants. Alternatively, other studies use small groups of gamblers (i.e., qualitative studies). The present paper reports findings from a sample of gamblers diagnosed with gambling disorder by professional clinicians via individual interviews. The study investigated the association between gambling advertising and gambling severity by looking at other psychologically relevant variables such as impulsivity, emotion regulation, and general psychopathology. Methods A sample of 210 consecutive treatment-seeking patients was recruited from a public hospital from June 2019 to January 2021. A path analysis model was run to determine the relationship between the variables. Gambling advertising was constructed as a latent variable, comprising the perceived impact of gambling advertising, persuasion knowledge, and the attitudes towards gambling advertising. Results Gamblers with greater gambling severity reported higher perceived impact of gambling advertising, and more positive attitudes toward gambling advertising. Gambling advertising was a mediator in the paths between emotion regulation and gambling severity, and between impulsivity and gambling severity. Conclusion The study demonstrates among individuals with verified gambling disorder that there is a relationship between gambling advertising and gambling severity. Regulators have an empirical basis on which to restrict the exposure to gambling advertising of vulnerable groups.- ArticleA simplemodel for the self-assessment of digital preservationstrategies in institutional repositories(Springer, 2025-05-29) Barrueco, José Manuel; Térmens i Graells, MiquelInstitutional repositories (IR) are essential infrastructures for the open science ecosystem. They hold an increasing amount of digital assets that must be preserved for future use. There is a lack of evidence, in the published literature, of the extentto which they are fulfilling such a crucial function. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new self-assessment tool to allow a diagnosis of the degree of application of digital preservation strategies by repository managers. We have identified the available international standards in the area of digital preservation. Secondly, we have selected which one of them is the most appropriate choice to be applied to IR taking into account their particular characteristics and current situation. Finally,we describe the steps followed to develop a self-assessment questionnaire, founded on the chosen standards. The main result of this paper is a self-assessment questionnaire to be used by repository managers to asset their level of implementation of digital preservation strategies. It is made up of 46 indicators to evaluate five areas of action in the repository. The questionnaire includes the application notes required to work out the results. Repositories must guarantee the long-term availability of the digital contents they hold. This paper provides a model for the self-assessment of digital preservation activities. It is intended to be a simple and useful tool for repository managers in identifying best practices, strengths and improvement areas.

Article
Radical Republicanism. Democracy, Property and Rights(Berghahn Books, 2022-06-01) Guerrero Martín, David; Laín Escandell, Bru; Popp-Madsen, BenjaminOver the last two decades republican thought has attracted a growing interest from political, moral and legal scholars. These contemporary theoretical syntheses of ‘neo-republican’ thought have been closely related to intellectual history and the idea of recovering an overshadowed tradition of political thought. In this vein, a classical set of historical moments and places (e.g., ancient Rome, renaissance Italy, civil-war England or revolutionary America among others) and specific political practices within those contexts appear to be the main source of what republicanism meant – and what it could mean todayArticle
Time management profiles of college students and its relationship to sociodemographic and psychological factors(Emerald Publishing, 2024-11-27) Faure Carvallo, Adrien; Nieto-Fernández, Sergio; Calderón Garrido, Caterina; Gustems Carnicer, JosepPurpose: The objectives of this research are to analyze the sociodemographic and personality profiles most related to good academic time management among 845 students from different faculties at the University de Barcelona (UB) and to identify the explanatory factors of effective academic time management. Design/methodology/approach: Poor time management is a common behavior among university students and an explanatory factor for academic failure. A sociodemographic questionnaire, the Procrastination Assessment Scale-Student (PASS), the Academic Time Management (ATM), the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18) and the Big Five Inventory-10 (BFI-10) were administered. Findings: The results reveal that female students, education majors and those with high academic performance show better time management than the rest of the student body. Additionally, students who have better academic time management are also more neurotic, more open to experience, more responsible and less prone to procrastination. The factors established as explanatory of good academic time management are neuroticism, openness to experience and low procrastination. Originality/value: The implications of the results for promoting academic time management in university studies through specific actions are discussed.Article
Universities, heritage, and non-museum institutions: a methodological proposal for sustainable documentation(Springer, 2023-10-27) Salse, Marina; Guallar, Javier; Jornet-Benito, Nuria; Mateo Bretos, Maria Pilar; Silvestre-Canut, Josep OriolTo provide a sustainable methodology for documenting the small (and underfunded) but often important university heritage collections. The sequence proposed by the DBLC (Database Life Cycle) (Coronel and Morris, Database Systems: Design, Implementation, & Management. Cengage Learning, Boston, 2018; Oppel Databases a beginner’s guide. McGraw-Hill, New York, 2009) is followed, focusing on the database design phase. The resulting proposals aim at harmonising the different documentation tools developed by GLAM institutions (acronym that aims to highlight the common aspects of Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums), all of which are present in the university environment. The work phases are based mainly on the work of Valle, Fernández Cacho, and Arenillas (Muñoz Cruz et al. Introducción a la documentación del patrimonio cultural. Consejería de Cultura de la Junta de Andalucía, Seville, 2017), combined with the experience acquired from the creation of the virtual museum at our institution. The creation of a working team that includes university staff members is recommended because we believe that universities have sufficient power to manage their own heritage. For documentation, we recommend the use of application profiles that consider the new trends in semantic web and LOD (Linked Open Data) and that are created using structural interchange standards such as Dublin Core, LIDO, or Darwin Core, which should be combined with content and value standards adapted from the GLAM area. The application of the methodology described above will make it possible to obtain quality metadata in a sustainable way given the limited resources of university collections. A proposed metadata schema is provided as an annex.Article
Gambling-like features in fan tokens(Springer Verlag, 2023) Lopez-Gonzalez, Hibai; Griffiths, M.D.Fan tokens are a form of cryptocurrency that allow owners to participate in various fanrelated experiences such as voting on the music to be played during half-time breaks in sporting events. Since 2020, many elite sport teams have issued fan tokens, allegedly as a way to engage with fans and hear their voice. However, fan tokens also raise some concerns. They are largely gamified digital items that intend to keep fans within the providers’ app. Also, they can be traded in exchange platforms, which arguably transform them into collectibles, whose value can vary over time. Here, we explore fan tokens through a case study from a football (soccer) club (i.e., an F.C. Barcelona fan token). Drawing on literature from situational and structural characteristics of gambling, we analyse the gamblinglike features that fan tokens include in their product design. Such features are discussed from a public health perspective, comparing what they mean in gambling contexts and how potentially harmful they could be for fan token holders.Article
Article processing charges for open access journal publishing: a review(Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP), 2023) Borrego, Àngel (Borrego Huerta)Some open access (OA) publishers charge authors fees to make their articles freely available online. This paper reviews literature on article processing charges (APCs) that has been published since 2000. Despite praise for diamond OA journals, which charge no fees, most OA articles are published by commercial publishers that charge APCs. Publishers fix APCs depending on the reputation assigned to journals by peers. Evidence shows a relationship between high impact metrics and higher, faster rising APCs. Authors express reluctance about APCs, although this varies by discipline depending on previous experience of paying publication fees and the availability of research grants to cover them. Authors rely on a mix of research grants, library funds and personal assets to pay the charges. Two major concerns have been raised in relation to APCs: the inability of poorly funded authors to publish research and their impact on journal quality. Waivers have not solved the first issue. Research shows little extension of waiver use, unintended side effects on co-author networks and concerns regarding criteria to qualify for them. Bibliometric studies concur that journals that charge APCs have a similar citation impact to journals that rely on other income sources.Article
Delivery riders' cultural production in Spain: A thematic analysis of their self-representation on YouTube(SAGE Publications, 2023-03-28) Pires, Fernanda; Tomasena, José Miguel; Pina, MartinaThis study analyses YouTube videos about delivery riders in Spain as well as the channels in which the videos were uploaded. The aim is to understand the ways that riders are represented in the videos and determine the labour imaginaries that emerge in the context of platformization, which includes work that depends on platforms that use computer architecture and automation systems to arrange exchanges between people, goods, and corporations, such as the work of delivery riders. This article shows how platformization of labour intersects with cultural production because delivery riders’ work has become a video theme in the YouTube platform. Moreover, in some cases riders (or aspiring ones) use YouTube and other social media to interact, share knowledge and organize their job. Based on a thematic analysis of delivery riders' YouTube videos (n = 40) from 26 channels mined with YouTube Data Tools, this study presents a typology of channels in which riders appear. It also categorizes the main representations of riders as well as the imaginaries that emerge about this type of labour in YouTube videos. The analysis indicates that delivery riders’ work has a transitory nature, which is expressed in the analysed videos. Moreover, the study demonstrates that immigrants are the people who tend to do this type of work in Spain, and shows how being an immigrant plays a particular role in the way riders are represented or gain their social conceptions and aspirations about this kind of work.Article
Article
Shared motivations, goals and values in the practice of personal science: A community perspective on self-tracking for empirical knowledge(Springer Nature, 2022-05-25) Senabre Hidalgo, Enric; Ball, Mad P.; Opoix, Morgane; Greshake Tzovaras, BastianSome individuals do not limit their self-tracking efforts to passively collecting and observing gathered data about themselves, but rather develop it into forms of self-research and self-experimentation, also called “personal science”. This type of N-of-1 research is relevant to the fields of personal informatics, patient-led research and social studies of science, but as a knowledge generation practice is still poorly understood. To fill this gap, we conducted 22 semi-structured interviews to investigate the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of individuals engaging in personal science activities, as well as shared goals and values present in self-research communities. Our analysis is based on a conceptual framework that integrates previous approaches in self-research, as well as in connection with citizen science, the scientific ethos and cooperation in peer production. We identify how self-researchers seek to go beyond personal metrics about their health and wellbeing regarding data provided by wearables, are engaged over time by individual involvement in technology and scientific-related activity, and collaborate following similar goals and values when learning and sharing empirical knowledge with peers. In this sense, personal science can be understood as a specific type of citizen science and an example of a more participatory and inclusive scientific culture driven by self-reflection, critical thinking and openness.Article
Make (digital) space for and with the young: Arts-inspired co-design of civic tech for youth mental health policies(SAGE Publications, 2024-07-23) Bussu, Sonia; Senabre Hidalgo, Enric; Schulbaum, Olivier; Eve, ZarahPublic engagement, digital or in-person, is mostly adult-centric and ableist, often universalising the experience of participation of a narrow demographic (white, older and middle class). In Mindset Revolution we combined arts-based and creative methods with civic tech to co-design participatory spaces with a diverse group of young people, where to discuss and influence mental health policy and practice. The paper examines the digital element of the project, where young people, supported by a team of academics and digital designers, used the Decidim civic tech platform to engage with their peers and policymakers. This co-design work helped inform changes to the platform towards more accessible and margin-responsive participation that can better support active engagement of traditionally excluded groups. The young people evaluated their own participation and social impact, challenging assumptions about youth participation. The flexibility afforded by the digital platform was crucial to sustain engagement. However, although often branded as digital natives, the young people we worked with perceived digital participation as an enabler but not a central element of their work on social change. Follow-up work on the platform is shaping it as a space for collective oversight, with opportunities for open-ended dialogue between young people, the community and policymakers to identify and navigate barriers to implementation of young people’s proposals.Article
Using an individual-centered approach to gain insights from wearable data in the Quantified Flu platform: Netnography study(JMIR Publications, 2021-01-10) Ball, MadBackground: Wearables have been used widely for monitoring health in general, and recent research results show that they can be used to predict infections based on physiological symptoms. To date, evidence has been generated in large, population-based settings. In contrast, the Quantified Self and Personal Science communities are composed of people who are interested in learning about themselves individually by using their own data, which are often gathered via wearable devices. Objective: This study aims to explore how a cocreation process involving a heterogeneous community of personal science practitioners can develop a collective self-tracking system for monitoring symptoms of infection alongside wearable sensor data. Methods: We engaged in a cocreation and design process with an existing community of personal science practitioners to jointly develop a working prototype of a web-based tool for symptom tracking. In addition to the iterative creation of the prototype (started on March 16, 2020), we performed a netnographic analysis to investigate the process of how this prototype was created in a decentralized and iterative fashion. Results: The Quantified Flu prototype allowed users to perform daily symptom reporting and was capable of presenting symptom reports on a timeline together with resting heart rates, body temperature data, and respiratory rates measured by wearable devices. We observed a high level of engagement; over half of the users (52/92, 56%) who engaged in symptom tracking became regular users and reported over 3 months of data each. Furthermore, our netnographic analysis highlighted how the current Quantified Flu prototype was a result of an iterative and continuous cocreation process in which new prototype releases sparked further discussions of features and vice versa. Conclusions: As shown by the high level of user engagement and iterative development process, an open cocreation process can be successfully used to develop a tool that is tailored to individual needs, thereby decreasing dropout rates.Article
Building Capacities in Open Knowledge: Recommendations for Library and Information Science Professionals and Schools(Frontiers Media, 2022-07-14) Santos-Hermosa, Gema; Atenas, JavieraThe impact openness to knowledge is having, not only in the Higher Education (HE) sector but at the public and institutional policy level, is largely due to the efforts of information professionals and researchers, and thanks to these two groups, initiatives such as open access (OA), open education (OE), and open science (OSC) have changed the way in which research is being taught, conducted, and communicated. Openness is a way to democratise access to knowledge developed through public funds, and this movement has been led by informational professionals worldwide; however, we have observed that to a large extent, professional development in different areas of openness is rather self-taught, informal, mentored, or continuous, but not formalised in information science, documentation, or scientific educational programmes. In this exploratory research, we gathered evidence on how (or if) openness to knowledge is being taught by reviewing a series of syllabi from undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Library and Information Science (LIS) schools sampled from universities that either (a) are leading the agenda in OA, OSC, or OE; or (b) have policies in OA, OSC, or OE; or (c) have national/federal mandates, policies, or regulations regarding OA, OSC, or OE and also from a range of non-formal and/or lifelong learning training programmes offered in these same three areas. We found that while LIS schools are not providing formal training to gain skills and competencies in openness, their libraries are offering different kinds of training in this respect. On the other hand, the good intentions and openness awareness of policies have not yet materialised in actions to ensure capacity building. Research implications aim to influence the development of capacity building in open knowledge, by providing solid evidence for enhancing curriculum advancement in LIS schools and by proposing some recommendations in this direction.
