The origin of the ice-free areas of the Hurd Peninsula (Livingston Island, Antarctica)
(Elsevier Ltd., 2024-11-15) Oliva Franganillo, Marc; Palacios Estremera, David; Sancho García, Leopoldo; Fernández-Fernández, José Manuel; Çiner, Attila; Fernandes, Marcelo; Garcia-Oteyza Cira, Julia; Sarıkaya, M. Akif; Serrano Cañadas, Enrique; Kaveh-Firouz, Amaneh; Pérez-Alberti, Augusto; Schimmelpfennig, Irene; Vieira, Gonçalo; Bonsoms, Josep; Antoniades, Dermot; ASTER Team
Spatio-temporal patterns of glacial retreat determine the intensity of geomorphological, hydrological, and ecological processes in the ice-free areas of the Antarctic Peninsula region. The chronology of glacial oscillations in the region following the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is still poorly constrained and mostly limited to data from a few sites adjacent to research stations. The Hurd Peninsula, located on Livingston Island (South Shetland Islands), is mainly covered by the Hurd Peninsula Ice Cap (HPIC); there is a ca. 20 km2 ice-free area downvalley of the ice cap in the peninsula’s southern sector in addition to numerous nunataks that protrude above the HPIC. In this study, we present an approach combining two direct surface exposure dating methods, cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) dating and lichenometry, to reconstruct the spatio-temporal patterns of glacial thinning and ice cap retreat on the Hurd Peninsula. To understand the patterns of deglaciation on the peninsula, 26 samples for CRE dating (in situ cosmogenic 10Be) were taken from glacially polished surfaces and moraine boulders along a transect from the nunatak summits to the coast. On the most recent moraines, boulder stabilisation (i.e., indicative of glacier withdrawal) was dated through the longest axis of the 10 largest thalli of the lichen species Rhizocarpon geographicum. Ice thinning might have begun before the LGM at ca. 31.6 ka, when the highest areas close to the coast became exposed, and subsequently accelerated during the LGM at 20-18 ka. The upper surfaces were completely deglaciated between 16 and 14 ka. The HPIC was relatively stable until the mid-Holocene, when neoglacial advances of its outlet glaciers built moraines at ca. 4.5 ka. Subsequently, late Holocene polygenic moraines formed before the development of the external ridges of the most recent moraine system left by the HPIC outlets during the Little Ice Age, at 0.3 ka. The internal moraines correspond to glacial advances from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as indicated by lichenometric dating. This work presents a comprehensive chronology of glacial oscillations on the Hurd Peninsula, enhancing our understanding of deglaciation patterns and offering insights into glacier dynamics due to climate variability and change.

Stepping on the beaten track? Walking behavior and profiles of cruise passengers in Barcelona
(Elsevier, 2025-04-01) Delclòs-Alió, Xavier; Arias Sans, Albert; Tavafi, Fahimeh; Mejía, Verónica; Catalán, Marta; Gutiérrez, Aaron
Cruise tourism is growing worldwide, accompanied by increasing scrutiny of its impacts. We examine walking behavior of cruise passengers, given the predominance of this means of transportation when exploring cities among this group of visitors. We used Global Positioning System (GPS) and survey data from 793 passengers in Barcelona (Spain). We found that cruise passengers allocate half of their visit time to walking, underscoring the pivotal role of walking in their urban exploration. We identified five distinct walking profiles among cruise passengers, and observed variations in perceptions, including sensitivity to factors like heat, availability of benches for resting, and feeling of crowdedness at visited places. Our study provides valuable insights for urban planners, tourism authorities, and policymakers seeking to address the issues related to visitors' mobility flows in the city, and it contributes to the academic debate on cruise tourism by offering an in-depth understanding of cruise passengers' pedestrian behavior.

Soil quality in the urban gardens of Barcelona (Spain)
(Springer Verlag, 2024-01-18) Dondini, Cosimo; Úbeda, Xavier; Certini, Giacomo; Francos, Marcos
Purpose Urban agriculture is expanding worldwide and is being promoted by the FAO as a strategic activity because of itsenvironmental, socio-economic, and educational benefits for citizens. In Spain, it is estimated that there are more than 20,000urban gardens. There are many variables to take into account when starting to cultivate an urban garden, among which thequality of the soil is crucial. Nevertheless, some studies have shown high levels of contamination in soils dedicated to urbanhorticulture. The sources of contamination can be various, such as previous unrecognized management and irrigation withpoor quality water, or the addition of polluted compost and other soil improvers. Soil contamination can migrate to vegetablesand fruits, thus entering the food chain.Materials and methods In this study, we analyzed the soils from ten urban gardens in the city of Barcelona, with a specialfocus on possible contaminants. Based on the possibility that irrigation water is a source of pollution, this was also analyzedin all investigated gardens. Results and discussion Some of the waters analyzed for irrigation have a high concentration of salts, and a few of them containnitrites, which are listed as a pollutant. The dominant texture of the soils was sandy clay loam and loamy sand, the pHwas generally high, between 7.87 and 8.41, clearly carbonated, with Ca generally being the dominant exchangeable cation, but without the risk of a high percentage of active carbonates that could make it difficult to grow vegetables. The content inorganic matter was very variable, but in all cases it appeared to be potentially incrementable. The three tests used to checkpossible soil contamination from heavy metals, do not attest to significant pollution. Conclusions The soil quality overall is suitable for growing vegetables and allowing growers to work in these areas incomplete safety. Although it would be necessary to analyze also other toxic elements, not considered in this study, some ofthe measured ones could come from the gases of road transport or even from the port of Barcelona.

Beyond Carbon Tunnel Vision: How Climate Change Hegemony Distorts Environmental Awareness and Hinders Comprehensive Action
    (Scilight Press, 2026) Martín-Díaz, Jordi
The planetary ecological deterioration continues unabated despite half a century of global environmental concern and three decades promoting sustainable development. In addition, this period has not served to consolidate an awareness congruent with the nature of the eco-social crisis for most of the population. The paradigm of economic growth is still hegemonic, while the emergence of climate change as the latest environmental emblem has resulted in a modification of the mental frame through which individuals comprehend socio-natural interactions and, consequently, the imperatives for global sustainability. Today, a common misconception is the belief that climate change is the main factor of the contemporary ecological deterioration, and that an eventual decarbonisation of the economy will be sufficient to resolve the eco-social crisis. In contrast to other environmental concerns that have dominated public and political attention, such as the issue of resource scarcity, the rise and consolidation of climate change as an ‘environmental emblem’ is a consequence of its compatibility with the paradigm of economic growth. I argue that the prominence of climate change in environmental discourse, while undoubtedly raising awareness of one of the core planetary boundaries, has, in reality, actively hindered a holistic comprehension of the eco-social crisis. Its alignment and promotion within the growth paradigm is fostering a ‘decarbonisation-only’ mindset that obscures and misrepresents other vital planetary boundaries, such as the biosphere integrity. This perspective paper examines the ascendancy of climate change, considering its cognitive and political implications, before proposing targeted measures to make meaningful progress in both awareness and mitigation policies.

Home-sharing as transnational moorings: Insights from Barcelona
(Routledge, 2022-01-25) Arias Sans, Albert; Quaglieri Domínguez, Alan; Russo, Antonio Paolo
Barcelona, one of the main destinations for Airbnb users, has turned into one of the main stages for the now global debate around short-term rentals and their impacts on resident communities. Criticism has mostly focused on the conversion of housing into conventional tourist apartments while less attention has been paid to the problematization of short-term rentals in primary residences. Important questions thus arise as to whether these allegedly genuine forms of home-sharing should be 'formalised' at all through a regulation, and which type of controls should be applied. Our research helps to excavate this issue, shedding further light on the different logics and practices behind the development of home-sharing, and discusses the limitations of a regulation which is being introduced. To this end, it offers an in-depth analysis of the home-sharing supply in Barcelona, tackling its social and spatial logics, which is framed in the broader debate on processes of social change affecting inner cities. It then focuses on el Raval, one of Barcelona's core neighbourhoods where home-sharing practices have become more diffused, revealing how these practices are strongly correlated with high residential mobility and the presence of a single-dweller childless European resident population. Finally, we argue that home-sharing becomes an equally problematic agency of conversion of housing into a mooring for mobile communities, further contributing to potential gentrification and the displacement of residents.

Perception, attitude and opinion of the Spanish tourists about the episodes of extreme heat
(Wessex Institute of Technology Press (WIT Press), 2012) Gómez Martín, Belén; Armesto López, Xosé Antón; Martínez Ibarra, Emilio
Here we present the perception, attitude, opinion and behaviour of Spanish tourists when faced with an episode of extreme heat, with temperatures similar to those forecast for summers at the end of the 21st century. This information should help to fill the current gap regarding knowledge of how tourist–citizens perceive certain extreme episodes and behave when faced with them, which could be highly important given that such episodes may become ‘normal phenomena’ as a result of climate change. This information may be useful in devising strategies for the adaptation and future sustainability of tourist destinations.

Tourism and quality agro-food products: an opportunity for the Spanish countryside
(Wiley, 2006-03-08) Armesto López, Xosé Antón; Gómez Martín, Belén
This paper describes the relationships between tourism and the agricultural production of traditional products, the latter having achieved new levels of appreciation in recent years as a result of quality designations. In this context, agro-food products can be considered as gastronomic tourism resources that enable tourism both to be developed and itself become a tool for promoting and commercialising quality agro-food products. These two circumstances merge around a single aim: the local development of areas traditionally regarded as marginal within the regional context. These facts are showed in the Catalan region of Priorat (Spain) where wines support the local development.

The Spanish tourist sector facing extreme climate events: a case study of domestic tourism in the heat wave of 2003
(Springer Verlag, 2014) Gómez Martín, Belén; Armesto López, Xosé Antón; Martínez Ibarra, Emilio
This research explores, by means of a questionnairebased survey, public knowledge and perception as well as the behaviour of young Spanish tourists before, during and after the summer holiday period affected by an episode of extreme heat in 2003. The survey was administered between November and December 2004. The extraordinary heat wave of the summer of 2003 can be seen as an example of a normal episode in terms of the predicted intensity and duration of European summers towards the end of the twenty-first century. It can therefore be used as the laboratory setting for this study. In this context, the use of the climate analogue approach allows us to obtain novel perspectives regarding the future impact that this type of event could have on tourist demand, based on a real experience. Likewise, such an approach allows the strategies of adaptation implemented by the different elements in the tourist system in order to cope with the atmospheric episode to be evaluated. Such strategies could prove useful in reducing vulnerability when faced with similar episodes in the future. The main results indicate that Spanish tourists (young segment market) are flexible in adapting to episodes of extremely high temperatures. Their personal perception of the phenomenon, their behaviour and the adaptation measures implemented to a greater or lesser extent before that time, reduce the vulnerability of the sector when faced with this type of event, at least from the point of view of this young segment of the internal national market. In Spain, the episode of extreme heat of 2003 has led to the implementation or improvement of some adaptive measures after the event, especially in the fields of management, policy and education.

Potential impacts of P2P acommodation on Rural-mountain areas. A case study from the Catalan Pyrenees (Spain).
(Universität Bonn, 2021-06) Gómez Martín, Belén; Armesto López, Xosé Antón; Cors i Iglesias, Martí
This paper seeks to contribute to existing literature by exploring the potential impacts of Peer-to-Peer (p2p) accommodation on a rural mountain area in the Pyrenees in Catalonia (Spain). The results indicate how widely p2p accommodation can penetrate areas of this kind. The findings suggest that this phenomenon has brought few benefits for local development and has created severe competition for conventional tourism accommodation, despite having a smaller economic impact in terms of job creation and tourist spending. In addition, the relative ease with which it avoids administrative and fiscal controls has negative repercussions for the tax revenues of local authorities. The growth in tourist rental properties is also having harmful effects on the study area in terms of its tourist load capacity, and the high pressure it puts on housing stock is causing shortages in residential housing and sharp price increases.

Tourism, Climate Change and the Mass Media: representation of the issue in Spain.
(Taylor & Francis, 2016) Gómez Martín, Belén; Armesto López, Xosé Antón; Amelung, Bas
This paper sets out to analyse the information dedicated to climate change and tourism in the Spanish press in the Mediterranean region of the peninsula during the period 1990– 2010. Specifically, it seeks to determine the quantitative evolution of media coverage of climate change and tourism and the importance given to this subject. Adequate media attention in both quantitative and qualitative terms could greatly influence public concern and contribute to the social mobilization that will be needed to negotiate/resist the phenomenon in a geographical area in which tourism is a major economic and territorial driver and which is particularly vulnerable to climate change. To construct the corpus, we undertook a systematic analysis of newspaper coverage of tourism and climate change in the media selected; and we carried out content analysis of the 1014 units identified. The results indicate that the coverage is outstanding in quantitative terms. However, the importance given to the subject is quite marginal.
